Clare you are right about cichlids in general but I was surprised Rams were members of the Cichlid family, they are the most placid fish in the tank and perfectly safe for community tanks. Also its not a case of your zebras will all be dead in 6 months, it just that out of that 11 expect some to die off as they are really fish that are used for tank setups and not fish you'd buy for longevity and show. Like I said out of my original 10 I have only 2 left and that had nothing to do with water quality or other fish killing them.

So really, how many rosy barbs should I get and how many rams? Maidenhead had some nice plecs which don't grow too big. They don't need pairs or anything do they?

Yes you want to keep them in groups as they are very social fish. You would be better off getting 3 or 4 of just one kind instead of a pair of each. Having learnt from experience I wont buy fish in pairs anymore, if one dies then you have the hassle of trying to find a suitable replacement that matches size and age. The Rams are much more entertaining than the Rosy Barbs in terms of watching their behaviour. Plecs are fine on their own however.

OK, good advice as per usual Will think about it after our holiday.
I do really like Clown Loaches though, they are such amazing fish. I watched the tank this morning - with the light turned off - and one of the loaches was playing in the air stone bubbles and racing against the filter outlet! He was loving it

yes - i have owned amano, bamboo, glass, cherry, bumblebee, tiger, etc, etc Currently i have 5 variants of marine shrimp and lobsters. I know my shrimp - and a crayfish will eat fish and is a daft purchase. Crayfish and crabs for freshwater tanks and pointless and should be left in the river!

Got some neon tetras and a clown plec yesterday. Feel a bit aggreived as I've read a bit about the plec which says it doesn't ever come out and doesn't eat algae!
Anyone want to buy a plec?

I love them too. Very entertaining fish, when they come out! They often chuck gravel out from under the bogwood they've made their home, trying to dig in deeper - there's a little pile building up near the entrance

As I said in a post earlier the safety in numbers aspect has a big effect on clown loaches. I did a big clean of my tank yesterday, everything off but the light, sponges replaced in the main filter plus sponges washed from the other two filters and gravel cleaning and some plants moved. Fish had to put up with me messing in their tank for nearly 2 hours. The whole tank went into hiding for several hours afterwards and the last to emerge were the clown loaches, once the other fish were out they felt safe to come out. The water current has increased in speed a fair bit due to the pump cleaning and all 4 loaches are out tonight playing in the fastest part of the current in the tank. They are my favourite fish by far

Give them time, my six are out nearly all the time with the light on or off, digging up sand, playing in the flow or swimming up and down the glass around food time.
They have a big enough stone den that all six of them can get into and that keeps the stress levels down and gives them a refuge should they get spooked.
I've never come across another fish that are as entertaining to watch but I do think you need at least 4 to 6 of them for them to act naturally.
Cheers

I've got 4 now. One is alot smaller than the others and it's great to see him swim with the bigger ones. I often think he looks up to them and will rarely come out without one of the larger ones.
They are special

I feed a bit in the morning and then at night. The loaches come out once the flakes have settled to the bottom.
The tetras have added colour and shoal nicely with the Danios

Great pics Lee. Thats what I feed mine on too and they are growing really fast, with Hikara Plec wafers for the two plecs which the Clowns help themselves to as well. Have you had that 22yr old Loach since young? Probably still got years and years left in it yet as well

My Dad had a tank when I lived at home, he bought four loaches when I was 16, I'm now 38.
My Dad gave up his tank about 12 years ago and I took the loaches on, they have lived in four different tanks.
I lost the other three some years back after a storm left us without power for days. I was doing tiny water changes and putting hot water bottles in the tank every few hours including through the night but I only saved one.
I now have a genny on standby should the same happen again.
Cheers

Not good, I know what thats like. I lost my two large 9 year old Clowns when they got white spot from stress in moving tanks. It wasn't the white spot that killed them but the treatment, it removed too much oxygen from the water and while the other fish were fine I didn't know at the time Clowns needed more oxygen than most other fish and they suffocated, by the time I realised what was happening and got them to the fish shop and into a highly oxygenated tank it was too late The local fish shop then admitted they gave me the wrong treatment but wasn't much I could say to that after they did their best to save them.

Sorry its been a while LOL, hope you got the blue lights sorted in the end
My clown loach comes to the surface and clicks his mouth in the air whenever I left the lid of my tank
I want to start training my knife fish to eat out of my hand too, as they are capable of doing that and let you touch them too, as they have been known to lie on your hand
Most of my fish absolutely love frozen blood worm, they go mental as soon as I drop them in the tank, especially the clown loach, he cant get enough of them LOL
I stick them in a small glass of water to let them defrost first before putting them in the tank, as they dont tend to like frozen fish and can possibly kill them due to the drop in internal temperature, or so I have heard

Just spotted this thread.I have 2 tanks running at the moment (well the other half claims the tropical one even tho i look after them) One is a 2ft 49ltr tropical tank stocked with more plants than the blue peter garden and peppered catfish, clown loach, green tiger barbs, neon tetra, cardinal tetra silver shark and a couple of blue dwarf gourami
The other tank is the 'mans tank' full of malawi cichlids, absolutely stunning fish to watch but very feisty and protective of their own areas of the tank.
I never knew there were so many fish lovers on this forum will watch with interest
