I'll stop now don't worry, it's only feeding if he's getting the upper hand, not when he's getting owned.

You are also questioning whether it even happened for some reason. This makes me suspect you have a hidden agenda Pete.
The reason I question whether the events happen in the way they are being portrayed is that our government and the mod have a history of making propaganda out of events that have occurred in time of war or when it's convenient to do so.

I don't just call dead soldiers pieces of meat as I already explained I think all corpses are nothing more than cold, dead flesh so I can't understand what possible reason there is to risk one's life to rescue one.

We already covered the 'pete' thing, you're making a mistake.

As for the other comment about 'trolling', it's pathetic in the extreme. None of my comments are being made for purposes of trolling the thread. They are all perfectly reasonable and reflect my true and honest opinion. If you don't like them fair enough, try explaining why they are wrong. On the other hand I guess it's probably easier for the limited intellects on here to put their heads in the sand and cry 'Troll' and somehow believe they are 'winning' the argument.

Just thought I'd stick my ore in...

The guys involved simply took advantage of the assets they had available in order to return to collect a colleague in trouble. They were simply knew he was 'missing', another apache had eyes on the individual in question but didn't know his condition at the time. They went to get him.

The troll can say what he wants - I've endured over 10 years of individuals like him mouthing off. It means nothing to me, nor anyone else in uniform.

At risk of sounding cliched, if anyone honestly thinks some their own political opinion means anything to those in a situation like that, they are idiots. If they think they went back for any other reason than that was a fellow Soldier in trouble, they are idiots. I doubt there was even any consideration not to go back for him. They simply did.

Our friend there wouldn't risk his life for someone else. What a great contribution to society such a selfish, self-absorbed person must be.

Ian. (Currently in S. Afghanistan after returning from leave)

Well said Ian, you have my utmost respect, along with the aforementioned 99% of people on here.

I'm nowhere near brave enough to do what you do and unlike some, I don't pretend differently when I'm behind my keyboard.

I think Afghanistan in particular is a war well worth fighting too.

Keep up the good work and let's keep this thread on track.

If you don't feel that what you like to call 'my mouthing off' is of any meaning to you then why comment?

You also make comments such as 'our friend here wouldn't risk my life for someone else'- that isn't something I can say I would or wouldn't do, although I'd like to think I would if I thought they were of value. What I can say for certain is that I wouldn't risk my life for a dead sack of meat.

I also question whether the events under discussion took place in the manner described to us whereas you accept them as fact.

You say you're in Afghanistan, can I ask how you reconcile your occupation of someone else's land with your own morality? Do you feel it's justified to kill people in the name of Blair and Bush or are you merely a professional killer/mercenary who does whatever his paymasters tell him without thought to the moral implications?

I really don't understand which 'depths' you are referring to.

Your comments 'it's great to hear something positive for once' are exactly what I'm talking about. Doesn't this type of story, or at least the promotion of it to the media, strike you as ripe for propagandising?

Why are you people so ready to be spoon fed by the media and this government which you normally seem to spend most of your time bitching about?

Bonehead, very apt name BTW, what exactly is it you class as trolling? Why does a different opinion have to be classified as trolling?

Just because I'm not jumping on the 'slap them on the back bandwagon'?

It was on track until you posted that.

The thread title is 'the marines rescue on the apache', that's what I'm discussing.

Is it just something that happened/is reported for the purposes of propaganda? To get numpties like people on this thread waving the flag for 'our boys' rather than concentrating on what's actually important ie the number of them coming home in body bags?

Spent 8 years in 42 Commando as a "bootneck". Loved every minute of it.
Have experienced the ups and downs that hand in hand with life in uniform.

There will always be those that slag off the men and women that fight for their country its their right to speak out. At the end of the day though who protects that right? That's right the very men and women you're slagging off.

As for the political rights and wrongs I don't care about that. What I do care about is I am proud to call myself a Royal Marine as I once was I am sure those lads are too. They have every right to be.

Just my tuppence worth.

It was an incredibly brave and noble thing for the marines to have done. Wouldn't expect anything less from our elite! Shining example to us all.

Whilst I would never question the motives of soldiers returning to rescue a fellow soldier who may still be alive, I'm afriad I do have an issue with dangerous operations to retrieve soldiers known to have died.

It's a terrible thing for a family not to have the body of a loved one returned to them for a proper burial, I know.

But at the end of the day, it's an even worse thing for soldiers to be needlessly killed trying to retrieve someone who is beyond help. I may be being terribly presumptuous here, but I really don't think the fallen would want their friends to risk getting killed for their body, nor do I think the families would want any other familes to go through what they've gone through for the sake of a loved one's body.

One person being killed in action is bad enough; recovery operations for the deceased become a question of 'how many extra funerals are you prepared to accept for the sake of one casualty of war?'

Holding this view does not mean denegrating the courage and nobility of those who would undertake these missions and I sincerely hope I've not upset anyone on here by taking this viewpoint.

I just think the bravery and nobility spoken of above could be put to better use.

I think most people on here will respect your opinion NS04. While they may not agree with you, you have refrained from using derogatory terms to describe the dead!

I don't! The only ones who actually know what happened are the people that were there, and regrettably one of them is no longer with us!

At the end of the day, the only way to ensure you're not deceived is to not read/listen/watch the news!!

Nice return "Rabid" nice hint of humour with the new nickname. Just a pity your banter about "meat sacks" hasn't improved. You seem to bring that comment out everytime you talk about the Armed forces. I suppose given long enough you will no doubt remind us of the huge amount of money your earning abroad and the readily available funds in your chequeing account.

Still nice to be able to put another of your nicks on ignore.

Most of the boys out there, do not want to be there but while they are there they build stong bonds with each other, Just imagine you were left on your own in a town were every one wants you Dead, even if your last though on this earth was that you Know that your "Buddys" are coming to get you and you will be laid to rest on England's greenest hills.... Firstly let me say in order to have been 'busted' you'd have to have been hiding something. I'm not, it's just that some of you are a bit slow on the uptake, a bit like the stupid kid at school who never quite 'got it'.

Anyway back on topic I've read some ridiculous sub-macho bull**** on here before but that poppycock 'at least your going back to be laid to rest England's greenest hills' (sic) takes the biscuit.

Why exactly do you 'believe in the war'? From my point of view you and your ilk are nothing more than tools of Bush and Blair. Powerless vassals whose blood is being shed to further their new world order. I genuinely feel sorry for you, your bodies are being shattered, your psyche's raped and your families deprived of their loved ones or at best getting back some damaged shadow of what they once had.
What actually makes you feel sick 'Jak' is the ****tiness of your existence, I'm just a convenient target for you to vent some of your impotent rage on. Vent away I'm big enough to take it.
