Funniest part of all is that all the wine barrels were empty. They were brand new and on their way to the vinyards to be filled.
Pictures of idiots plastered all over the papers today rolling them up the beach or in boats lugging them away.

I'd imagine that the barrels in question aren't too cheap, and people were reportedly going to make them into tables etc.

You'd have to be an idiot to think you could lift or roll a full one anyway.

You lot can call me what you like but I'd be there if I was local.
**** it, you get nothing for nothing in this world so you grab what you can.
I'm not rich like some are and most pretend to be on here, I tell it like it is. If a brand new BMW bike washed up in front of me I'd fcukin well push it home. And I can't even ride a bike.

Like I said, type whatever you like about me. I don't take the moral highground to impress other internet users like you do.
When was the last time you posted something that wasn't just a link to some other pointless ****e?

Also I don't need to take the high ground, I have morals unlike yourself.
What bit don't you understand - it's not your property.

I do have morals but I live my life the way I want to. Don't judge me for any reason other than....... actually just don't judge me. You have no idea who I am nor do I you. Leave it at that and get back on subject or shut up and I will also.

I don't know who you are, but you have come onto a discussion forum saying it's OK to take other peoples property just because it washes up on a beach, I think it's pretty easy to say that it is an immoral thing to do.

The point of our little personal debate was that you judged me because of where I live. Don't do it, you don't know me.

I wouldn't abuse you, I'd think it and say it but i'd never type anything for the whole world to see.
I find that sort of thing stupid. There will always be someone better or more experienced in everything you do so to belittle or abuse anyone may come back and bite you, so I don't do it.

I thought you could only claim salvage rights in international waters where no country or government has juristiction(sp) surely anything washed up on British shores until claimed by the legal owner should be protected by the countries authorities.

Nope. Morally maybe that should be the case but legally it isn't. I think the law actually stems from the fact Devon and Cornwall have a history of shipwrecks and goods being washed up on their shores for centuries and it has always been fair game to go and recover what you can. The laws were put in place to allow this tradition to continue but to protect the legal owners of the goods the requirement of reporting what you have salvaged to the wreck owners was put in place. This allowed the wreck owners to recover the said goods if they still wanted them. (This may not be 100% accurate, its based on what I have heard/read up on since the wreck was reported so wait to be corrected with some links stating the law and its history).

Did you read post #9?
The law that governs salvage does not make it illegal for anyone to remove an object from a wreck. However they are required by law to declare to the owner of the wreck what items they have taken. The police were not able to arrest anyone because by removing the motorbikes they were not breaking any law. The police were handing out forms which is all they can do and informing those removing objects what their legal obligations are. The crime is committed when the person removing the item does not declare to the wreck owner what they have taken.

The point I'm trying to make is about intent. It's all very legal to "save stuff fromt he sea and fill in and present the correct forms" but it's not legal to turn up expecting to ride off into the sunset with no worries.
It's probably true that anyone they arrested on suspicion would get off if it ever went to court. They didn't try to make a difference, establish a presence on the beach though.

Police were doing nothing.... Police should have been doing something!
Just a few simple questions would do.
PC: What are you doing with that then sonny?
******: I'm getting myself a free BMW motorbike.
PC: Well you're nicked then.
Coppers probably had a doughnut or two to finish or worse, nabbed a couple of the bikes for themselves.
Fair to say people are descending on the area. Sky seem to be interviewing "beach combers" all day long. Yesterday, apparently, three blokes from Liverpool wandered along looking for freebies.
