It's easier to prove and process than speeding.

Serving Officer West Mercia:

I wonder what your superior officers would make of these type of statements? Perhaps best not to sink QUITE to that level, eh?

Again, low post counts and the inability of how to 'behave' on a BBS. How childish.

Yes, but you can't blame him, he was provoked. It's dead easy to sink to the level of the other posters when you first come on a BBS. Not condoning it though. I used to be the same.

Thing is - an idiot driving on a phone is more than likely an idiot driving when not on a phone. The police still do very little to punish them, so why bother with the extra phone stuff?

How about they ban smoking while driving? Which, in my opinion is far more dangerous than talking on a phone.

Either way, the inept Goverment will continue to tie up police officers with paperwork, while replacing them with next to useless community officers and cameras. Then punish drivers for talking on the phone while driving, and letting people who drive without insurance, licences, drunk drivers and the like get away with comparatively tiny punishments.

Sounds like a great idea to me. How about removing for life the licence of anyone who gets caught drink driving twice?

It's not even close.

Talking on a phone distracts you from your surroundings and reduces concentration on the road. Smoking does none of these things.

Course it takes your hand off the wheel - but then, so does changing gear, so that's not really an argument.

The smoke in the car is usually countered by opening a window - and a smoking induced coughing fit is about as common as any other coughing fit/sneeze. ie. not very often.

The whole reason mobiles are banned is because it takes your concentration away from driving and towards the conversation at hand. Smoking requires zero concentration.

Yip, I'm sure driving around with something on fire in your mouth isn't dangerous and distracting in the slightest.

Shouldn't people be concentrating on their driving not having to get their addiction fix??

I'm fairly sure I'd rather a phone drop in my lap....

If using a phone was banned because of the conversation, surely the driver would be isolated from passengers and it would be illeagal to sing along to the radio. Actually - surely radios would be illeagal for the driver to listen to as well??

Surprisingly not. To a smoker, it requires about as much brain power as breathing.

See this is an interesting phenomenon, that has had some study into it. Firstly listening to the radio etc requires no interaction, you do not have to assimilate what is being said to you and forumlate a reply.

Secondly, there is evidence that talking to someone face to face as it were requires less concentration. The person talking to you will modify their conversation based on the conditions. For example, in heavy rain, a passenger is likely to remain quiet. Also, you are far more likely yourself to not reply to any comment until you feel confident in doing so. It is unlikely you will do this on a phone conversation, we deem the phone demands an immediate response to any discussion.

It is a fascinating thing really, and one you experience yourself if you are hands free on the phone; you almost lose yourself in the conversation when on the phone, yet when a passenger is in the car, you remain alert and attentive to the road during any conversation.

As to why that is, I have no idea.

So - the basic point is that talking on a phone is not dangerous in itself. What is dangerous is not telling the person on the other end to shut the hell up when your trying to go around a roundabout?

Soooo... its the lack of common sense in the driver that requires legislation. Not the actual use of a phone!?

Don't get me wrong - I think talking on a phone when driving is stupid. But I can think of (and seen) things people do while driving that are far more stupid. I just guess this is a big easy one to prosecute, where as driving without due care or similar is just too much hassle to take to court - even if in the circumstances its far more dangerous than yapping away on a phone on the inside lane of a motorway.

I'd like to see women, (and any men that do it), wearing stupid high heels to drive in, prosecuted. an immediate three month ban would do it, plus the shoes should be crushed

Alcazar, (and yes, I AM serious, at least about not allowing driving in high heels).
