At 33 I've not long realised life isn't about the biggest tv, the fastest car, the nicest house and the most expensive toys.

To me it's all become clutter.

I see all this potential, and I see us squandering it. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

The earth maybe just a spec of dust compared to the universe but I'm dam sure I'm going to explore this awe inspiring place before it's too late.

Only one thing we can all do about it mate. It happens every 4 years or so.

In the meantime I will sit back and enjoy things, as I am only here once. I will work hard (which I enjoy) and pay my slice to Gordon. And his successor. And his/hers. Which I will do for the rest of my life. And when I die, I will pay some more. Robbery yes, fact of life yes, but no amount of moaning will change it. Not in my lifetime.

So forget about it and have fun. If I stop enjoying work (unlikely), I won't moan, I will do something different. Make the change. I am lucky. Got great family, great friends, good neighbours, fresh air, clean water. There's a little bit of **** in my life, but there's a bit of **** in everyone's life. When I have no roof over my head and no food to eat (pretty unlikely), then I will whinge.

So sit there with your half-empty glass, I'm off for the last hour in the pub with a full-to-the-brim one. Guinness for me please.

Voting? Don't make me laugh. We've had nearly 30 years, with numerous different governments from two supposedly different parties, and what have we had? Self-serving, greedy, crony-ist, sleazy, uncaring, dishonest, do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do, GITS!!!

What's voting for anyone else going to do? They're ALL the same: once they get IN to power, their snouts go into the trough, and their promises go out of the window.

What we really need is revolution, and anarchy............

It doesn't need to be first class flights and five star hotels..

I'm not working my bollox off for someone else to get fat on , however that doesn't mean I wont do a job I enjoy, for a wage that I feel is adequate.

You don't need a shiny 2 year old car when a 10 yr old car gets you there just as quick.
Your house doesn't need 3 bedrooms when there's only two of you
You can find something more entertaining to do in the evening instead of you and the kids staring at the xbox and sky tv every night..
Any need to have bought that new mobile that just came out when the old one made phone calls just as well...????

That's how I've come to see it anyway.
and yes I have a bloody great TV, a fast car, the latest mobile, the newest laptop and other various gadgets that I ain't got the time to use.

I've just come to the conclusion of "What's the ******* point"

Saxo, doesn't that just imply you have a boring job? There are plenty (but accept not most) of people who get a buzz from their jobs, being paid well for doing it is the icing on the cake.

I can't believe there isn't a job in the world that could have given you a buzz every morning. Aircraft pilot, designing cars, buildings, rockets. Creating drugs that might save a childs life or designing a piece of kit that could provide clean water to some god forsaken village.
How about digging around uncovering where humans have come from, how civilisations were built and destroyed? Something based on music or language or the arts?


There are loads of interesting jobs out there, if you take the time to work at them. For me, playing poker (though I love a gamble) for a living would mean that my 60 odd years on this planet have been a waste of time. I might aswell have not been born.

You shouldn't have to play poker for long to set yourself up for life. Assuming you are good enough to make decent money and not grind out an existance for 40 years!

Those jobs you mention would appeal to me but how on earth do I go about getting them - I don't think I could hack 4 years of uni to retrain and I don't entirely trust myself around hot student females that much Also, as the primary income generator in the house how would we pay for the mortgage, etc. FWIW I'm already down the bottom end of the Edinburgh property market so I can't scale back. I think you are right that I'd be a LOT more satisfied if I did I job I actually enjoyed and cared about but I just don't see how I can bring that about

No actually we keep reading ad nauseum how bad everything is and how it is all NL's fault and occasionally we get a post saying how you shouldn't sit around complaining.

Anyway if you feel as strongly as some of you seem to indicate you do there are a number of things you could do.

For instance find a political party that best matches your views, join them, campaign for them, work to try and change the things you say you hate so much. If said party doesn't meet your needs 100% try and persuade them to change their policies by attempting to get involved in action groups within the party or think tanks regarding policies etc.

Or find a single local/national issue you feel strongly about and join the relevant action group or start one if you have to and campaign for change.

Alternatively join Scoobynet and make hundreds of posts about how bad things really are and how Tony Blair is the devil incarnate as that will really help sort things out won't it? Maybe it just makes you all feel better if you have a good collective moan

left school 10yrs ago, went staright out to work in a tyre and exshaust place, went to college for 1yr and trained as a mechanic and spent my 2nd yr on an apprenticeship but money was crap so had to leave so i joined my dads property maintenace firm, went to college for 3yrs to get my nvq,ccn corgi etc and spent about 7-8 yrs on the tools but now in the office which can get boring from time to time but hey it pays the bills

What a load of crap. We all know the democratic voting system is flawed. it bounces back from Labour to Tories and nothing will change. Forget that.

I'm with saxoboy on this one. Had a bloke who came into my shop. a hard working doctor. fit as a fiddle. Was getting overworked but told me his pension was due in 2 years. Next week he dropped dead. All gone due to stress.
