Lincoln is interesting. Good climb up Steep Hill to the cathedral.
With all due respect to the other ideas, it's just as interesting to head for smaller towns with a wealth of stuff to see and do. Take a map and input certain places on your route into the net and see what comes up.
Gt Britain is a GREAT place, as you will find out.

I like Edinburgh too. If you do come up here, you have all the usual sites like a ruddy great castle and hills in the middle of the city centre (why did they build it there ? ), plenty of good pubs, museums, decent shopping, strip bars (oops, forgot about your missus !). Also, if you hire a car, you can drive west over to Loch Lomond and then up to Fort William past some of Scotland's best scenery (see if you can persaude her to go mountain biking there ! ).

Mr Andy Mc, Scottish Tourist Board

# ~ Green Impreza available for hire at the excellent rate of £100/day, only thrashed occasionally.

You got it in one!
I spent a bit of time in OZ including Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise etc. I used to fly in and out of Coolangatta.

Thanks to all for the replies, all helpful stuff.

I can only speak of the places that I know, but Birghton is cool, and Cambridge and Canterbury are nice.

And London, of course

York and Edinburgh get my vote for the culture thing aswell as everything else. Leeds and Manchester for some museums, shopping and eating/nights out.

Another vote for Chester - the rows, the cathedral, walk round the Roman wall .... and if you're going by car, travel thru the Welsh Marches for castles and fortified houses.

Liverpool

Great bars, good shopping, museums and touristy stuff galore, a beautiful Cathedral (and Paddy's Wigwam) the Albert Dock, the list is endless. You're also a short drive from some of the most beautiful countryside in England, if that's your bag.

The dearth of major investment throughout the '60s '70s and '80s has actually done Liverpool a favour, because unlike Birmingham and Manchester, there is a distinct shortage of 'communist bloc chic' architecture

With a GF I would say Cambridge and/or Oxford. Both have fanstastic buildings, great eateries, shop. Ok night life - can verge a little on student side if you don't know where you are going.
Depend what time of year you visit but punting in Cambridge has to be down with a little pininc.

Also agree with Brighton, if you are a party going. Doesn't matter what bar/club you end up in its a good night out. Plus there are loads of cafe for the traditional fry up the following day

Cardiff and Manchester are quite surprising to visit if you haven't been in a while.

LOL! Have done exactly that (but with a dull hire Megane) and stayed on the banks of Loch Tay at a lovely hotel called Ardenoig (sp?). Climbed Ben Lawyers and Ben Glas (in the snow) and also thoroughly enjoyed Edinburgh (a friend is from there so we had good info).
Also suprised at how fun Glasgow was but then that's not what an Edinburgh dweller wants to hear!

Will be back soon.

Having drunk my way around most of big cities and towns in the country i can confirm the best are York and Edinburgh, although Manchester comes a close third, plenty to do during the day and great nightlife
