He's got a point, the expensive DVD wont be 100 times better than the cheapo one, a dvd will play in either, the more expensive one will be way better built, last longer and look better, the sound and picture quality will be better but how much better, all dvd's have to meet a certain standard just to play the disk.

I reckon its about 25% actual performance and 75% to the law of diminishing returns and making the owner feel special, proffesional and discerning, with a hint of being able to impress mates.

My theory is to avoid the most expensive and the cheapest and get something middling, to try and hit the sweet spot between price and performance. Buying cheap stuff usually costs money in the long run because it needs replacing, Remember Amstrad, we went throuh 8 videos until we gave it up for a bad job and bought a Sanyo (lasted 15 years as opposed to 15 minutes).

I spent £500 on a denon DVD player a couple of years back along with a £50 one for the bedroom the £500 gave up after 13months the £50 is still going and being abused by the kids. I would never spend more than £100 ona branded DVD player now.

May be worth getting 2 of these cheapos one to replace the kids one and one for the spare room.

Thanks for the Info PSLewis..

I know what you mean... my expensive Denon is picky about what it will and won't play; a hint of vibration due to the hole being off-centre and it goes bonkers. The same discs in my cheap Panasonic recorder play fine.

But: whereas on a cheap, or even modestly priced TV and sound system you wouldn't notice the difference in quality, on a really decent setup the Denon shines. To a home cinema fan, the fact that a DVD player is disposably cheap is no consolation when the picture and sound are fuzzy.

As long as it works, though, you really can't go wrong for £9. You could buy a lot of them for the price of one decent player...

I bought one when it was still £17.
Its survived two tours of Iraq and is still playing anything I throw at it - whereas my expensive one at home is a pain in the **** and only plays what it feels like.

The only expensive home entertainment item that I think was really worth it was my big LCD TV.

its not a theory, its a way of business

its why zymol and such make any real money, because most people buy the middle of the range product, price the top end stuff WAAAAAAAAYYYYY up there, and watch the mugs splash out on the middle of the range stuff, that is vastly over priced

Buy QUALITY GEAR and it'll last you a lifetime AND you get 2nd to none customer service.

Buy RUBBISH and it'll be in the rubbish bin time and time again and you'll get laughed at if you complain.

Mind you - that is just my personal viewpoint.

I kinda like to hear my music as it was intended to be heard!

That gets me onto speakers and oxygen free cables but I guess you can't throw pearls etc....

Not always. I paid £425 for a dvd player a couple of years after they came out. Problem is now they dont play everything. Technology has overtaken it.

Pete
You are realy going to upset some Hifi freeks today ! Most just spend to make themselves feel "part of the movement" and to try and impress some dumb friends.

Ive seen it many times. they only think about money . They want to spend for the sake of it. There is a battery powered amp that rocked the hifif world a few years ago. It was so good .people would Talk it down because they where so embarressed that they had spent so much more and this little thing was so much better !

Link: http://www.audio-ideas.com/reviews/p...mps/t-amp.html. Ive listened to one that was tweeked a bit and its amazing !

Damm beat me too it

Oi pissy
Is that why we waste so much money in the govstapo defence departments... they either buy crap gear that fails all the time, or super expensive gear that neads a squillion pound support contract.

so you tell me? you claim to be the expert so so what is it? are you reccomending crap gear, or overpriced gear?... either way, dosent say a lot for your stuff when it comes to crunch time!!!

so who will you blame if the goods dont deliver???

Several refrences to this being a portable dvd player - minus the built in screen that is !!! correct me if I am wrong folks but this is not the case and its mains only ??

possibly the size off the thing causing the confusion ??!!

I bought one of these months ago for £18 and it broke within 2 weeks. There's no FF capability, the only way to search is to put in minutes, seconds IE 00:01:00.
It automatically plays subtitles and doesn't understand the subtitles off option.
Absolute garbage, no wonder its been knocked down to £9.
