I really can't see any differences in the specs of the two consoles translating to significant differences in quality of games; both are very powerful. As Bill Gates said "We have a ferrari, they have a Ferrari. We started the race earlier, in most forms of motorsport, that's a very good thing"
As above, I suspect it comes down to which one has the developer support. One would have to say the 360 has the edge here, if only for the fact that the developers have had much longer to play with it!
£425 is too much too! Although I suspect people will pay it in roughly the numbers Sony had hoped for............and then cry in their beer when Sony reduce it to £299 in 6 months time!

Agreed
The PS3 game developers are REALLY going to have to get their fingers out to produce something people feel worthy of that price tag. I'd imagine Sony realised this and pulled out all the stops to have a stellar launch line up for the consoles prior release in Japan and the US, but where were these stellar games ? Nowhere to be seen. Instead we got the usual sequels crap like Call Of Duty III and NBA 07, Motor Storm (with no online play), Ridge Racer, etc...
Thats all well and good, but this time around they have some MAJOR competition in the form of XBOX360 - a machine thats cheaper, seemingly equally as powerful, easier (and therefore cheaper) to develope games for, and has been out a whole year before the PS3.
Its early days and ludicrous to write off PS3 so soon, but they have a hell of a job on their hands this time around.

Virtual Tennis 3 is also pretty jaw dropping in 1080p.
I will be getting one day-one.

Who said that Pete?
Personally I find the Wii at best gimicky and worst childish. Played one round at a friends house the other week and was bored with it within 5 minutes.

Is it to miss the point ? If MS does bring out the rumoured motion sensing controller (which of course they did first with the sidewinder). What does the Wii do thats so unique ?

Not at all. As I see it there is no reason to own a PS3 yet other than to be billy big ***** down the pub but even then you'll just look like a geek. Still you have a nice big paperweight for now until anything decent comes out for it.

Its a new IP cos the developer, Evolution, lost the licence to do WRC #9. Also, it was rushed out for the original launch (published by Sony?), sacrificing online play. It also looks NOTHING like the E3 promo, so that was another big con of pre-rendered nonsense. Roll on Motor Storm 2,3,4,5 & 6

Since when did I have to get your permission when to buy a PS 3 and why exactly am I geek just because I have ?.
It's not about bragging, it was merely purchased because a) it was much cheaper and b) it was in stock and ready to go and c) I can afford it.
Clearly you are an opinionated person that clearly has missed the point and just wants to have a pop at people who you don't actually know ( quite how you knew about my big ***** though I don't know ).
You have said you see no reason to own one that's fine I however have waited a while to get the PS 3 as my PS 2 is knackered and I never bought an XBOX 360.
As for any decent games out clearly you have not done your research as plenty of internet sites sell PS 3 games so there is more than enough choice and obviously more/better to come.
More money than sense, nice of you to say so if buying a PS 3 early gives you the impression i'm some sort of rich geek then that's not all bad .
Anyway nuff said, I'm off down the pub to talk to like minded anoraks about my glorified paperweight and perhaps i'll buy everyone a drink whilst there, got to get rid of this pesky money somehow .

There are currently no decent PS3 title available, (all of the launch titles are average at best), and the ones that are ok are all multi-format and I've finished them on the 360 already
I'm going to hold off getting a PS3 until there's something worth buying one for, (probably after the summer)...

End of the day, it's a rip off. The consumer needs to stand up and oppose Sony's blatent attempt to trojan horse their BR format on the back of a stupidly priced console. All well and good if you want a BR player, but what about the millions of people who don't? I hope Sony fail with the PS3, if just to teach them a lesson, it will teach them to deliver a "gaming" machine in future.

As Ed has stated a lot of people will somewhat blindly buy a PS3 because of brand loyalty to Playstation, so I think its helpful to have threads like this where the merits of each can be discussed.

Which is fair enough if people have played on them, otherwise it's all subjective conjecture.

As someone has already stated i played one around a friends house for half an hour and really cant see what the fuss is all about. So what exactly is special? Felt a right **** waving a controller about and the Graphics are hardly groundbreaking are they? Not in my line up im afraid, always liked Nintendo but the Wii is a disapointment so far.

These are the two main factors that stand out for me and why it has been such a success in my house/with the whole family. No other console or game has got my parents playing, ever. I took the wii round Christmas day and at first I got the normal reaction of no not interested in computer games but when they saw it they were playing and addicted within a couple of goes.
We had 4 generations playing bowling from my 9yr old son to the Mrs' Grandmother who is 78! Thats not going to happen with my 360, PS2, PS1, Xbox, Gamecube, DS or PSP. The wii gets people playing who never normally batter an eyelid at a games console/computer game. My parents, being golf mad, are now waiting for Tiger Woods Golf to come out and they are going to get a wii for this game and wii sports. I never would have put money on that Nintendo are really onto something with this, even if Microsoft copy it and release a wireless controller it wont make a jot of difference to Nintendo, they have already done it and got the fan base.

What do you mean, "Controller aside"? Thats the whole point. Wii is the most accessible video games console ever. Why? because you need zero experience of playing video games to enjoy it - Someone who has never played a video game in thier life can become proficient in 2 minutes, becuase the controller does away with joypads and dpads and button combinations. You just move the controller as you would a tennis raquet, or bowling ball or fishing rod, whatever.
It is a million miles away from the freestyle sidewinder, in fact the two are completely incomparable.
You really need to play one to see exactly what I mean, as it is obvious from you comment that it isn't unique that you haven't.
Think eyetoy or singstar or buzz - graphics are secondary, the game experience is primary. It's the same with Wii but on a much, much grander scale.
Nintendo have been very clever, they basically aimed the DS at the non-gamer, and done the same, but even more so with the Wii - Let Sony and MS battle it out over the videogamers, Nintendo are after the untapped masses. It is the biggest inniovation in videogames for ages - Games that do not rely on flashy graphics, instead games that are just plain fun and can be enjoyed by everyone, not just gamers - And thats what makes it unique

As I said in my earlier post, which you clearly didn't read, there was talk of a Wii type controller in development for the 360. Which is why I said 'Controller aside'. I wasn't making a direct comparison between the Sidewinder and Wii controller, the point is that MS came up with the idea and patented the very same technology.
A controller does not a console make
The plain fact is that the Wii has nothing that will make it stand the test of time. And yes, I've played on one !

Or does everybody now take what they read as gospel?
Plenty of specs, facts, figures about new cars that look great on paper.....
We've got a Wii and I'm having great fun playing Zelda. But, to be honest, it appears to be a rebadged gamecube from what I can tell so far. I know it's early days, but that's my opinion having played on it for some time

By the way, I happen to like what the Wii is currently offering, I just think the gimmick will soon wear off. I'll even be buying one.
I asked a serious question to which I'd hoped for a reasoned answer. Please don't patronise me by repeating back to me what it currently offers as Nintendos marketing department have made that pretty clear. Whats the future of the Wii ? Thats where there's a black hole.

Thats probably my biggest question as well. I've only got the sports as nothing else really appeals at the moment. Tiger Woods will be got when it comes out but at the moment I see no other major titles that appeal to me. I am hoping Fight Night will come out and also Top Spin Tennis or an equivalent. Also for us boring cricket fans Brian Lara's cricket could be a real winner. What I really want to see from Nintendo is a list of titles that are in the pipleine for this year.
