They are well worth the search ......... the Bug Eyes are slow, heavy, ugly and unloved.
Have to agree, of course I have a MY00, not standard tho I'm not sure about classics looking dated tho, I think they age well, especially if it's a typeR or P1 etc.

Build quality? Nothing has ever fallen off any of the classics I've owned, you may get an odd creak now and again, but I can live with that for a car that's depreciation proof

Not putting the classic down as had one

If you buy a late classic now you won't lose much money if any on it as the vast % of depreciation will have already occured. For sturdiness the price to pay is in weight.

Well mate i would rather pay the price in weight rather than my life if ever had an accident, touch wood i dont.

Anyway the 400bhp i am running through my STI is more than enough to propel it

There are limits as to when you can pile more weight into a car and still be happy with power to weight ratios. I thoroughly enjoyed my Lotus Elise when I had it; never felt unsafe because of it's weight and it was nearly half the weight of my present car.

A heavily modded sti is not the same as a standard bug eye wrx.

would like a lotus elise they are nice.

I must admit i dont like the lights on the wrx bugeye, wish they had used the sti lights on all models, which make the car look a lot nicer

While I admit the my01-02 has a controversial look, I don't think it is ugly. Let's face it: Imprezas are not beautiful cars, but they are damn good ones. If you want a good looking car get an alfa

As for the performance I can say this: I had a 02 wrx PPP, and it was not slow. In fact I always succeed to pass my friend in his decat classic. He also admitted it mine was faster However this might be really dependant on your engine as I have driven another bug PPP which was nowhere near mine....
However, I sold the bug just 2 weeks ago and got myself a low mileage my05 blob sti PPP. As a comparison pretty much everything feels better on the new car, and as performance it feels much faster compared to my bug, however, I find it is more a feeling of being faster, in reality I think it is faster but not too much. But the driving experience way beats the bug, so if you can afford get an sti. If not and you go for a bug, make sure you get one in good condition.

The bug eye was a backward step IMHO in terms of performance.

Classics are getting on a bit now but there are still plenty of goods ones out there offering raw fun performance that the bug eye equivalents can't seem to match.

I think that the '99 - '00 classics are the nicest looking scoobs ever built. They're the epitome of the marque. The others might be faster, safer and handle better (arguably ) but they don't have "scoobness". It's an indefineable quality, but the newage don't have it. Every time I look at mine, I see a thing of beauty.

As they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" IMHO Alfa's are not good looking cars.

Always loved the "classic" shape impreza (which is probably why i own an MY00). Hated the Newage when they came out but they are all growing on me more and more, can see myself in a Blob/Hawk STI in the future (if i can resist the dark side)

I had a moddified MY99, then was Scoobyless for 3 years before getting a MY01 bugeye wagon last year and it didn't feel anywhere near as lively (as it shouldn't - given the modding of the classic I had).

However, got a second hand prodrive back box, a decat centre and an AndyF tek3 remap and the car now feels light and alive again.

Richard.

Glad to hear the mods worked out Richard - mine are more or less identical. And that's exactly how my bug feels on 273bhp too.

The Classic is the king ..... even in the public eyes! Still, after 7 years in a Classic, people look and know what I am driving - the BugEye looks like a Corolla which has had a bad shock.

The Classic is seen as THE Impreza .....

Nothing since has captured that look, that feel, that pure 'poetry in motion' ...

That feeling that you are driving something that everyone wants, that everyone admires, that you are driving a true motoring icon ... and when you are laid on your death bed you will look back and smile that you owned and drove the performance car of the 1990's decade.

You won't be too happy talking about your BugEye .... "I drove the ugliest carbuncle that ever rolled off a production line"!!!
