firstly to the person who thinks a fabiavRS had 250 bhp........ did it have a different engine or something? they come with 130bhp as standard! 0-60 in 9 secs and tops out at 128......which all in all is pretty much identical to the sport. which in the fabias defence isnt bad for the 1.8 engine. the new octavie VRS are the quickers skodas with 200bhp..... so either way that person seems to be a bit confused.
the sport is fine..... and the reason for buying 99% of the time if the jump on insurance for a turbo. Ill quite happyilt pay my £600-700 a year being 19 to insure a sport rather than pay £2500 for a standard spec uk wagon. Thats before the running costs.
If you get a good sport you'll looking at a reliable run around. not bad mpg and shud have enough space. I couldnt say about towing.....
I have done 23,000 miles in mine so far and aside from the usual services have only had to change the disks and pads.
All imprezas seem to be dropping in price in the past year due to the sheer amount of imports coming in for very little money. £2.5-3k should get you a good sport, well looked after with good milage.

I'm happy with being a sport/gx owner

Luckily I've never driven a turbo version so don't know what I'm missing.

I chose the Impreza n/a because of the extra grip compared to 2wd drive cars. The impreza's AWD hides my inability to pull away on damp roads with out wheels spinning

My company car is a rwd 'sport' BMW 118D with a 6 speed gear box.
Apart from the linear power delivery of my impreza, it's nearer to 'sport' than the beamer.

BTW, keeping it on topic, my 2002 GX is worth about £3.8K at a guess. Only 1/4 the price of a new one

I have a sport wagon. Worst of both worlds for many i know! Wagon becasue i have it filled with either fishing gear, or bikes, every weekend. And sport, because I can't afford the insurance on a turbo yet. I bought it becasue i simply love the way they look. I put on a wrx bonnet from a breakers. That don't make me a gimp. It just means i absolutelt love the way they look! I have the car i have always wanted when it comes to looks, and i also have the most excited feeling in the world, knowing that in 2 years i'll be getting a turbo. For now, i'm happy, as i got the scoob i always wanted, and can still afford to run it!

Bongo
Get a sport mate. Some people don't simply want to rag it round. Some like the way it looks

i think the word jealousy springs to mind from some sport owners......??.....simple and straight.......a sport is a run of the mill car,a turbo is in a different class........it doest matter what you drive,as long as its what you want and within your means....everyone has a right to express a view and sometimes we may disagree.....wether i drive a 270bhp impreza 2day,and a 60hp fiesta 2morrow,i dont car,i love my cars...

that works both ways though.... get a lot of turbo owners who seem jealous that a lesser car like the sport could look better than thiers. Plus in current light on uk roads the top speeds are rare to get to play with on a regular basis...well without risking your licence, a nicely set up car for handling with reasonable go can still be fun.

Hence the reason I went from JDM 280 bhp turbo to UK MY1999 turbo to 06 2.0lR sport didnt need to sit in city traffic with 19 mpg or less averaging 25 mph on good days just to partake in the odd traffic light grand prix. Sport still has phenonimal(?) handling when I get the chance to use it but probabaly 8/9 mpg more and £350 a year saving on traker/ insurance. I bloody loves it Mind upping the sport to 160 bhp has helped it along a bit

happy that I sold my 99 T sport for 4K back last year now, seems that they aren't holding their value too well..

I loved my sport (got me through uni ,and into my first house without any major bills) did quite a bit of work on the handling, but really worked well for a few years happy motoring.. although no-one here approves of modding a sport, it was STi 5 inside and out for mine, with P1 wheels and PIAAs.. and I was happy as larry with it..

My vrs is fairly tickered with to be honest FMIC, remap, lower with upgraded dampers, upgraded anti-roll bar, bigger brakes etc.

I've had my fabia for 2 3/4 years now and clocked up 53k of trouble free motoring, it's being to "the ring" and the odd track day. And it's never given me one bit of trouble, so it's not going to be replaced. So the impreza would be a second car to take some of the mileage away from the fabia (this is only a weekend car believe it or not) as it's 20k over the so called "average" already.

But I've always wanted an impreza and I thought a sport might be a good choice in the sense of insurance/fuel consumpsion/running costs.
Though at the moment insurance for a sport is around the £580 mark (confused.com used at the moment) and a turbo is £700ish a year.

I guess it's my Londonish post code that does it, maybe I should wait until I move up north later this year/next year.

Drove a WRX on a 72hr test (that's how long I had the car for, not the time driving BTW).

Couldn't buy the RX after that - now have a MY07 WRX (all standard).

And this is my 6 post in less than 24hrs - coincidence? maybe

All Hawkeye 'Sports' (known as 2.0R or 2.0RX) have the 160bhp four-cam engine with AVCS variable valve timing. These are a completley different beast to the old 125bhp GX engine and are redlined at 7500rpm. The Hawkeye 'Sports' also now have pretty much the same running gear as the WRX (but with 16" alloys and non-vented rear discs) so the handling is now very very similar. Obviously Subaru trying to increase sales of non-turbo cars by narrowing the specification gap.

I had a Bugeye WRX some years back so I know what the turbo cars are like, but I had no experience of the Sport. When I considered buying a new '07 WRX I took a drive in a 2.0RX too, and was impressed - very similar feel to the turbo car only without the 'turbo kick' (obviously), but initial pull-away is very sharp. In the end I decided I couldn't justify paying the extra tax, insurance and other running costs on a WRX and went with the RX. The car will spend 90% of its time in traffic and at less than 50mph so it was just too hard for me to justify spending another £80/month on running costs of a turbo model.

Here's a road test on the Hawkeye 2.0R/RX models (I've posted this before BTW):
