Could we not let Simon get to the bottom of it first? I agree that security through obscurity doesn't work, as does everyone, but let Simon get to the absolute bottom of the issue first!

chiark,

Fair point. But since we've not had any recent comment about what in fact is going on, in the background, it might be allay peoples fears if we had some sort of update, no matter how devoid of detail.

There is absolutely no serious risk to anyone.

The worst that can happen is that someone will know your password if they have access to your PC (via your local network or by actually sitting at it or similar).

If you want to remove this risk completely.. remove your cookie AFTER you have closed down any browsers that are opened, before you leave your computer unattended.

Simon,

I can state that as of this evening I will rebuild my work machine to an NT based OS... this way I can pretty much guarantee that no one else will be able to access to my account from my machine. I need something that will stay up longer than 8 hours without a crash to, which is not something Windows 98 seems to manage. I am also clearing any locally stored password information on a very regular basis. This doesn't mean that I believe there was any unauthorised access from my machine, it means that I am reducing the possibility of any such incident significantly.

I have changed my password again, just to more sure. Only my hypnotherapist could guess the new one (that was a joke, not a clue).

Do you have logs of when the imposter did the damage? If you can let me know when it occurred, I can probably work out who had potential access to my machine. The cardkey and proxy systems we have for access here could well help.

Cool

Adam,

Withdrawal symptoms? Well I have had too much cold turkey in the last month, but that was more to do with the purchasing policy at the company canteen.

Moray,

I think peeps know it wasn't you fluffing around? The same thing has been happening on other BB's (I hope you dont mind me mentioning it and posting it to here and viceaversa)...at least that way we'll know where its going wrong and be able to rectify it.

Nath

PS: Mods? I'll delete the links on your requests

Thanks Nath,

Unfortunately, I don't think the issue in question is anything to do with me doing any "Fluffing" around. It's interesting to hear that other boards have been attacked in similar ways though. Simon has yet to get back to me with any definite news about the IP source of the bogus moderations.

Question

I don't know how many other people may have trouble logging onto the BBS earlier this week... Did someone explain what was going on and I just missed that? IIRC, at least one guy was being diverted to the www.i-club.com/forums bbs everytime he tried to log onto the SN bbs.
