If you were my patient and you rang me up this morning with this I'd have seen you by now. Well not today, because I'm on holiday
Are you NHS or Private John. My experience of NHS in Scotland is that you have to be pretty much dead to get an appointment the same day!! Maybe in Fife its different as 90% of the population is inbred and just blame conditions on gentic mismatch

Bottom line is if you tuen up to casualty saying you have chest pains you'll be seen straight away.
Then they will do an ECG which will probably be clear and you'll have to sit there for 4+ hours waiting to see a doctor who probably won't do much more than a GP but you will have wasted a few hours of your life..

Go see your GP, that's what they are paid for. But if the receptionist asks what the matter is:
they are not medically trained
patient confidentiality/Caldicott - don't tell them
they will tell you to call an ambulance cos you mentioned chest pain.

Could be a chest infection (?pain on palpation), could have pulled a muscle, could have shingles, could be any number of things. But unlikely to be a heart attack

Thanks for replies, its nice to SN cares

I have had a cough for last week or so, but have had said chest pains for at least 2 weeks. Just getting gradually worse as the days pass. I thought initially I had pulled a muscle and left it at that but that was 2/3 weeks ago so I'm sure it isn't that.

When I spoke to the receptionist I said chest pains and all she said was can do next tuesday at 9.10

Will ring in the morning and see if they have any cancelled appointments.

thanks

chop

Also had a bad back in exactly the same area. Any ideas? I thought maybe a chest infection? I'm 5'11, mid twenties & 11 stone and I like to think phsically very fit.

Go see the doctor or call the NHS advice line ASAP

Or to see if they have any patients who have dropped dead waiting to see one of their precious doctors

My practice (NHS) runs a system where we ask patients that want same day advice/appointment/visit to ring between 8am and 9.15am, we do ask them if they are prepared to give a brief description of the problem, mainly so that I can ring back "chest pain", "collapse" etc first! We have enough phone lines and receptionists on so that the lines are not blocked usually. The doc on call (2 on Mon am) rings back the patients and negotiate what is required, some are phone advised, some offered appointments from 9.30 am onwards. People call any time between 8am and 6pm with more urgent problems, it is about a once or twice weekly event for me personally to have a late afternoon chest pain presentation.

We are maybe a little better resourced? By that we don't have huge list sizes per doctor, flip side is less income than the more business minded surgeries, but a better service which is what I'm there for at the end of the day...

It is unlikely shingles if you've had it a few weeks and no rash has shown up by now. Still most likely muscular, followed by acid reflux/chest infection. You should of course contact your GP surgery again now and explain that you have chest pain and that you would like an urgent appointment. You could ask if your surgery are claiming the funding that they get if they offer appointments within 48 hours

The protocols that NHS 24/Direct have will generally mandate a huge number of people with chest pain getting into white vans with go faster stripes and lights driven by gentlemen or ladies dressed usually like green turtles who will stick needles in you and mask you up nicely (I have utmost respect for paramedics, just playing).
