World War 2 (The short version):
When the German's shot their guns, the British ducked.
When the British shot their guns, the Germans ducked.
When the Americans shot their guns, everybody ducked!

I bet we get no snow down here in NW Surrey. Any snow/flooding/thunder storms nearly always manage to miss here

Being in West Wales and quite close to the coast, I doubt our town will get very much.

Go just a few miles further inland and the place will be neck deep in the stuff.

This is complete bollox, scoobies are not ****e in the snow, British drivers and their total pig headed ness to accept that summer tyres do not work below 7 degrees, and claim you do not get enough snow to justify winter tyres is what is ****e.

Last week I was driving my 360bhp MY00 classic with 215/17 winter tyres in 6" of snow and the only time I ever came close to losing control of the car was, er never not even when dicking around.

Get a set of winter tyres and see how good your car really is in the snow.

heh that was a bit uncalled for wasn't it

Ok correction, scoobs are sh1te in the snow if you use normal road tyres. But we don't get enough snow to justify buying a set of snow tyres! That's the whole point. You might be able to afford another set for the 2 days max of any decent snow that we get, but most ppl won't or can't afford to

Wink

It comes down to how you drive !!! I see people in 4 wheel drive and awd on The Cat and Fiddle who think that because they have a 4 wheeel drive they are invincible. WRONG!!! the bigger the car the further you slide!!!

i have never had any problems in the snow in my Scoob ( normal tyres too)and i only have a GX it gets me over The Cat every time and i am a woman!!!

End of rant.

PS it probably won't snow now.

lots of mentions of scoobs on a non scooby related link. See they rule!!!

He didn't say snow tyres though did he, he said winter tyres - big difference.

Winter tyres usually just have a bit more grooving to clear water better, and are made of a slightly softer compound than summer tyres so they still have some grip when the temperature drops below 7DegC. This is different to knobbly snow tyres.

The fact that the roads grind to a halt every time there's a minor frost or 5mm of snow show that clearly there is a need for them in the UK during the winter. Since the government doesn't force everyone to use them (like on the continent) for their own safety, people don't bother fitting them then bleat on about how it's not their fault when they smash into the nearest hedge etc trying to drive at the same speed they do in the summer.

Btw I don't buy them as I live within walking distance of work and the shops, if it's icy or snowy I just don't drive. If I needed to drive I'd definately buy winter tyres.

People confuse Winter Tyres with Snow Tyres (M&S marked).

A winter tyre out performs a summer tyre at anything below 7degrees no matter what the actual weather. The rubber is of a different compound that stays softer/grippier at low temps and also has extra sipes in the tread to aid grip. I fitted winter tyres to the wifes Honda CRV (only part time 4wd, normally FWD) the other year and she had them fitted from November to April (around 8000 miles).
Gave excellent grip wet or dry and only took them off to save them for the next winter, only to sell the car before the next winter!

I have a new Navara 4x4 with M&S (Mud & Snow) tyres and they are rubbish on wet / icy roads because they are NOT WINTER TYRES. If they weren't brand new tyres I'd be putting winter tyres on (if I can get them in a size suitable for the 17" rims)

Yes but as you only use them for 3 or 4 months of the year they last for 3 or 4 winters depending on how many miles you drive each winter. They are also usually cheaper than summer tyres.

I have Nokian WR on mine and this is my 3rd winter with them, they cost me €121 each so you do the maths, so far they actually cost me €40 pa which aint bad if you ask me and they have another 2 winters at least in them.
