STI version 4 that's already had a rebuild - a bit like my own!! Blisteringly fast and completely reliable since it was rebuilt to a very high standard. I don't think you can get faster for the money.

Subaru Legacy 4cam Turbo. The forefather to the Impreza, and can be had for £2500 and much less likely to have been driven as hard and thus less abused; which many Imprezas have been.
Keep the other £2500 for petrol and beer
or...
5 Series BMW, get a good 535sport (preferably 6pot), may even get an old M5, much better handling dynamics than the 3series, and also tend to be treated better too (as feejits always have the M3 ).
Merc 190E 2.5 Cosworth, tank. Fast tank, and will be tired now at that age and likely treatment, still a hoot though.
Supra Turbo; Rice burning daddy of the dragstrip.
Wildcard: Jaguar XJ6 Supercharged. Fast, cheap, iffy on the twisties

If you're looking at 0-60mph times try this list. No prices but gives you an idea.

I had one of these, 286bhp, rear wheel drive and no traction control. So much fun!
Probably worth more now than when I sold it
I have a V5 STI JDM Wagon (paid £5K) and its the best car I've ever owned by far. Killer speed but can still do family holidays and tow a trailer. Servicing is easy and if you have a problem you can find the answer in minuets on forums like this
