Simply saying "Your wrong.." doesn't take much. I'm open to criticism and if i'm wrong i'd like to learn whats right.
You say that “grip has to be the most important” element and made a point that “that grip is the first and foremost factor when considering handling”. Also you stated that AWD is better under braking. AWD gives you better traction, not to be confused with grip. Grip allows you to carry more speed into corners, traction aids off the line acceleration. Eg a Lotus Exige will have higher cornering speed than a URQuattro. On loose surface, eg gravel/rally stage, the Quattro would be faster, but this is not down to grip since the wheels of the Quattro would still be spinning (hence why rally cars drift!), but by the fact that it has 2 extra driven wheels to provide traction to pull/push it around a dirt road.

Braking is determined by the size of the contact area of the tyre to the road, and obviously the quality of the brakes and tyres and weight of the vechcle. AWD is not a determining factor. But it seems you’ve come around to this since you’ve re-edited your original post!!

Weight of the vehicle does not determine the level of grip either. A 300bhp car weighing 1000kg will not necessary spin its wheels more than a car weighing 1500kg of the same power. If both cars had the same tyres, then the contact surface of the tyre to the road of the heavier would be greater to aid traction however, the tyres would have to work harder than the lighter car to keep the same cornering speed of the lighter car and would eventually loose grip sooner than the lighter car.

This is my understanding of handling, I’m not saying its right, so feel free to correct me. What determines a great handling car is not about grip but balance. Not to be confused with weight distribution, but balance and control between understeer and oversteer and how it reacts to drivers inputs over various road surfaces and conditions.

It doesn’t matter if the car is RWD, AWD or FWD, as a good FWD setup will out handle a poorly setup RWD/AWD car and visa versa.

Its not outright grip that makes a great handling car, but the level of grip is one of many factors. An example of this is the MX5, where it only has modest levels of grip but is considered one of the finest handling cars. Also Lotus reduced front end grip on its series 2 Elise by fitting skinnier front tyres to that of the series 1 Elise to make the car easier to control on the limit. A Lambo LP640 is poor handling and very snappy on the limit (according to Clarkson, who I concede, is a much better driver than me!)

Jonc please find where i have said AWD is better for braking? pmsl ?
If i have then its my dyslexia rather than my opinion.
As for me being the troll, i didn't reply to chrispurvis i quoted someone saying "Why do people mistake grip for handling" or vice versa, Chris then took it upon himself time and time again to question what i was saying.
He then continually quoted me, not from this thread but from one a week or so ago and continually compared ITR to Subaru, which i have not done.
If your looking for a troll you have him in chrispurvis, and he's proved he is by not being able to argue the point on a smaller quieter forum out of the way.

The original statement of "Grip is the biggest factor when considering handling" still stands. I'll ignore purvis' comments from here on in, but if anyone wants to debate or argue that fact without name-calling or quoting something i said 3 weeks ago or never actually said at all.

Same car, same BHP, same drive, same tyres but one weighing 1000kg and the other 1500kg the heavier car would be able to grip and is less likely to spin than the lighter car. I didn't at any point say anything about how it would handle, i think you'll find purvis said the heavier car would struggle from standstill and i corrected him.

Have a look at your posts no.35, 37, 39 regarding your comments about grip and handling. Regarding your comment about AWD and braking, post no. 43 has been re-edited from braking to accelleration.

Regard your post about weight of vehicles, you never mentioned anything about standing starts either! I would still say that the lighter car would still be faster off the line since it has better power to weight ratio!

If you're referring to this South East Mods :: View topic - FAO ChrisPurvis100 , seems pretty lonely in there mate!
So you have gone to get more 'buddies' to help you win this pathetic little dispute with some guy that you'll never meet? Get a life mate.

Its not my site, so saying its lonely is an attack on the guy that owns it not me really. Taking this "debate" from public view to a smaller place less likely to get cluttered with "Your an idiot" posts to me seems like a better idea.

You'll also find there's a couple of ITR owners on there.

So you want me to join you on another forum, to discuss what?

I have used this forum for 3 years now, I like it. I don't need to prove myself to some angry welsh bloke!
I noticed that on that other forum, you said that I got all my 'chums' to post in this thread. I don't know anyone on this forum apart from paul (hoskips) who sold me my old uk turbo, and Leesti who I sold my old sti to.
Neither of which have posted here.

Try again.

lol so if i changed my location to sydney you'd actually think i was from Australia? Please note southeastmods is for people in the southeast pmsl i was in Cardiff with a m8 of mine helping him setup home when he changed my location.
If you continue this on here people get involved, whereas elsewhere is more of a mix, including some of your buddies from the ITR forum.

Why? 'cos they own impreza's? for the 200th time a debate about how car handles is not a scoob Vs ITR debate. You really need to get over that.

No. What I mean, is that on a site with over 60000 members, you'd expect a fair and honest opinion.

Has this really reached such a childish level? I have just read that load of utter nonsense on the South East Mods forum.

Look 94impreza this is the Other Marques forum on Scoobynet. Chris used to own a Scoob hence being on Scoobynet and now owns an ITR hence posting in Other Marques about his experiences with the car.

How in the name of God can you have a problem with that?

If you don't like the frequency of his posts or some of the content then here'a a radical idea ... don't read them, but trying to drag the debate this way and that and onto other more 'neutral' forums ... well frankly it's laughable and bordering on the mildy obsessive.

Lol wow suprise suprise F1 fan comes to comment and sticks up for chrispurvis are you the same person or just lovers?. I think you all need to learn how to read, because i quoted someone else then purvis started the argument with me, then when people had stopped posting again i quoted someone else and again purvis starts the trolling.
This is exactly why i took it elsewhere, 'cos every so often one of chris' little bum-chums comes on "ooh 94 your a *****-head!" - Great argument pmsl

Chris is unable to post elsewhere purely because without his little bandits he doesn't have an argument and is a coward This is my last post on the subject. Lets see if the troll can leave it there on this site.

It's so laughable how some people become cage fighters when behind their monitor!
If you get your jollies from starting internet battles, then so be it.
You say that this is about 'handling vs grip'? No, its about 'a week with the integra'! Start another thread in the 'driving dynamics' section if you wish, as I won't be replying to anymore of your posts on this thread.

You can't talk sense to an idiot.

Morning! I can't believe how petty this guy is.
Even when you quote what he has said, he just ignores it and continues to throw abuse.
Everyone has been nothing but patient and polite to this guy, but he continues to write absolute rubbish.
Even worse, the guy has started a thread on another site titled with my name! I feel honored.

Had to laugh when original thread starter said he no longer felt like a chav driving ITR- your kidding!
I test drove one 6 years ago when they were still fairly un-known, and even back then people said it looked so laddish with its bright white paint, rims and red seats-and that was long before baseball-cap brigade got driving them!!
Anyway, didnt particularly impress me back then and bought an impreza instead that i still have to this day.
It would be a dull world if we enjoyed driving the same cars so i wish all you contented ITR drivers many more happy hours behind the wheel. Wish i could get your MPG!

I like the white car/red seats combo too Chris, I just prefer the slightly stealthy look my black one has now I've owned it a while. I'd have probably gone for a white one had I been looking for an ITR at the time (this one just came up for sale from a mate when I happened to be in a position to buy)

Black vs white is always a tricky one with TypeRs

The first teg that I looked at was a black one. It look nice apart from having swirl marks all over it. And having owned a black golf 5 years ago, I know how hard a colour it is to keep looking clean. Even after a damn good polish, all I had done was highlight the swirl marks and imperfections in the paint.
Black cars always look best, but i'd never own one again.
