Otis,
How about getting your dealer to put the argument to Subaru UK that perhaps they should look at it now under warranty as it could be something more serious, and costly, at a later date. Also, any negative feedback Subaru UK receive from an owner is usually treated with some respect at headquarters - try them direct.

Yex,
I have already involved the MD by writing to him as things were moving too slowly (now 3 months) and as a result had regular contact with a representative of IM.
As we speak the engine is actually out of the car. Under instruction from IM the heads and pistons have been removed and apart from poor valve seatings on #4 they cannot find the cause. The dealer has now been instructed to put it back together and IM have rung me at lunch today to say they all do it. To be safe I want a short motor and they are not prepared to do that. So I have said well at least have a look at the crank because that is the area where the noise appears to be coming from. Just because they have not found anything does not mean it won't do it when put back together. There's no getting away from the fact that this engine knocks, not pinks, rattles, taps or rumbles, it knocks
It's hard to describe, inside it sounds like it is coming from deep in the bowels of the engine. Those of you who have previously had the piston slap problem it sounds even more ominous than that!!!
With all your kind replies I think I have a strong enough case to challenge the 'they all do it'. To prove the majority do they are going to have to send a lot of cars to York to convince me.
Please keep posting as the more proof I have the easier it will be, and watch out for an update soon.
Many thanks again,
Otis.

MY00 UK turbo, 6 months old, 8000 miles approx.
As per my "tickety boo" thread in the Drivetrain forum a few weeks ago, I have also experienced some concerning sounds from my engine, though according to my dealer it was the normal 'thrum-thrum-thrum-thrum' that you would expect from the Scoobs boxer.
The dealer did offer to start up a few other imprezas in order to put my mind at rest.
I accepted this as over-paranoia and am now pretty much happy.
Webmaster:
Wouldn't it be useful if we had a sound file resource somewhere on this BBS distiguishing ticking, throbbing (oo-er!), knocking, piston slap etc
- just another of my idiot ideas....![](http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif)

Some rumbling, irregular idle too but not knocking.
Get a whining noise- sounds like a pully or belt- only at idle.
MY99, nearly 12k.
International Motors trying to f**k over a customer. Surely not?

Hi Otis, sorry I didn't make it out that Sunday to have a listen.
My MY00 with 10k does not knock at all as you describe but annoys me with other sounds.
I have a high pitched type of drone between 2800 - 4000 revs??? Sounds like coming from under car middle to front I think, anyone have a clue on what it can be?
Scotty
and
as I had a new turbo at 1000miles because it was VERY!!!! noisy upto 3000rpm. It took 3 visits to the dealer to get them to agree that something was wrong!! Had my car in bits for almost 2 weeks changing it.
Can you believe that I wanted a new Scooby because I wanted to know how it had been driven and that nothing could be wrong with it
my MY98 was spot on and never a problem I wish I'd kept it. And to top it off I was told by someone from a main dealer that Subaru were having problems with the new 2000 spec engine. I'll mention no names but you know them Otis.
Scotty.

MY99 7K - yes I know it is low mileage, but it was a garage demo for the first 6 months of its life.
No knocking noise as you describe but it does have a horrible squeaking noise when first started from cold - suspect the air con compressor pulley. Getting it sorted next service.
Keep the pressure on to get it sorted
Hogster
That Charlotte is pretty damn tasty

MY99 26K, no knocking that I know of. Sounds sweet.
Oh and for those with clutch judder, get it swapped under waranty. Just had mine done (with a new gearbox) and car is now smooth again.

Otis
Got to say what you're describing doesn't sound normal - keep fighting!!
MY00 12500 miles no knocking (but the usual clutch judder which is getting worse and will need to be done at the next service).
Good luck
Chris

MY 99 Saloon, 31,000 miles and never a noise like you describe whether starting from hot or cold. Sometimes though if the idle is a bit lumpy then the clutch (thrust bearing?) would make a low frequency knocking sound, a quick couple of revs and it would settle down though.

MY00 UK. Fitted PPP at 5k, now 19k. None of your problems, mate - with or without PPP. None of the surging, hesitation or flat spots that others report, either. Guess I'm lucky. Still got a bit of cold clutch judder and a sqweaky pedal. Good luck.
