99MY 23000miles definitely no knocking. I have heard it pinking on low revs at slow speed up hills very occasionally but that is all.
I had the clutch judder and Subaru just replaced clutch and flywheel under warranty.
Good Luck
Greg

I thought the fit bird in WatchDog was called Beaky?
The only knocking Sound I can hear is Otis banging the head of one of the Subary UK guys on his bonnet!
"You WILL fix my car, You WILL fix my car!"
Don't stand for this 'Fob you off' crap!

Otis,
My car makes allsorts of noises (MY99, 47,000miles)including a knock similar to yours. It's done it since new and you sometimes hear it as the revs settle and when you start it when warm. It tends to last 2 or 3 seconds and sounds quite light like valve gear, but I've really got no idea what it is. More importantly it hasn't got any worse after all these miles.
Clutch judder is a pain especially when cold, and I'm waiting for a new power steering pump that was making horrible whining noises after giving the car a blast.
Hope this is of some help.....

Otis,
Organise a Yorks meet starting at your dealer's, Many Impreza's can attend and owners can check out any knockers![](http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif)
Then see if they have the brass neck to say they all do it!

Hi Otis,
If they all knock then maybe your car is okay. Which means all of our cars are faulty.
What would the dealer say if we all went in to complain about our cars not knocking?
I think

MY99 14,000 miles
Yep mine knocks, when cold mainly, but occasionally when warm. Not loud just sounds like the valve train to me. Dissapears after about 5 seconds usually.
Bad clutch judder when cold but have been told that "It's a feature Sir" by 2 dealers now.

As far as clutch judder when cold is concerned I have read, though I do not remember where, that it is a normal feature of the car due to the material it is made of to enable it to withstand the abuse from it's owners. I have HONESTLY read that in a serious article - really!!
I'll see if I can find it and post it on, but it was a while back.
Scotty.

As a matter of interest, do you park the
scoob on a hill overnight?.......genuine
reason for asking!!
I have a gorgeous autographed pic (clothed unfortunately) of the aforementioned Charlotte H if anyone wants to start the bidding.

Exactly the symptons you mention.
I mentioned it to 2 seperate dealers at 3 services (now 22K) the responses they all do that or couldnt find it.
MY 99 model, previously a 98 model with no problems.
I also get it when depressing the clutch, but not engaging any gear, dies away to return later.
Very interested in how you get on. !!
2 years old in March, so over a year to go yet.

Read a thread a while ago on engine noises...especially knocks...some were attributed to ancillary pulleys...even loose crank pulley....so this COULD be a source....but I DOUBT IT.... The sound you describe sounds like Big end or Main bearings...but if the knock was that severe under any load ,hot or cold it would knock like hell...does it?....Could be piston slap if only happens when cold....I know much has been written about this again in previous postings...and in your case now that they have stripped it and looked at pistons/bores that seems to be an unlikely source....could it be that the knocking is coming from the gearbox under idle etc.....knackered mainshaft bearings or more likely knakered input shaft/bearings....this is not uncommon in other cars....so why not an Impreza.....
Good hunting....

Well it's back...........but not cured
. They have cured the rattly cam shaft type noise which was like a marble rolling around under the rocker cover. That must have been the poorly seated valves on #4.
As for the low knock it is certainly 70% less frequent but just as intense when it happens, if you know what I mean. It seems harder to get it to do it now, the twitching of the steering wheel or pressing of the brake does not bring it on as often. However, it still occasionally does it when I roll to a halt (especially backwards!?) and when you use the heated rear window
. I don't think it is related to the window though, it just puts the engine revs at the sweet spot like the steering and brakes did previously. Never been able to chase the noise with the throttle though, it has always needed the use of the brakes, steering and rear window to trigger it.....mmm...odd isn't it.
As for the engine, well that's just superb, so much smoother and more responsive. The dealer had an independant specialist on it and he was absolutely staggered that after 17k miles the engine did not have any real measureable wear. He went on to say that the relative easy life the engine has had could be a contributing factor to the build up around the valve seatings, so get your foot down lads and make sure you 'clear your throat' often.
Personally I am beginning to think it is belts and pulleys related. Despite previously replacing the cam belt tensioner the dealer still found tension to be poor when stripping it down. I am going to run it for a couple of weeks and see how it develops. Dealer has told IM I am not satisfied so they don't 'close the case'.
Later,
Otis.

Hey Otis (Animal House line),
My MY99 has 21000 on the clock now, and the noise you describe doesn't sound familiar at all.
Get some bitching clutch judder, though, despite the clutch having been changed at 7000. It's really beginning to p*ss me off. Goes when the clutch is warm, mind, but it's annoying nonetheless. Hope you get yours sorted.
Have you checked your boot? Maybe there's a mechanic stuck in there?!
