Replacing rear crank seal, gearbox off or engine out ?
#61
Some reading on the net would have saved you a heap of trouble. The first thing i read yesterday whilst searching for the cause of a leaking rear seal was "Do not push all the way in" & use a 4" PVC pipe cut off and fit flush.
Box out is 10x easier then engine out.
The question i would have been asking first, is why wa sthe seal leaking?
They just don't leak (very rarely)
either too much boost
Blow by ie: new rings time
or a rooted PCV valve etc.
cheers.

Well its a new engine(10,000 miles) by Api so there shouldnt be any problems there. Dare I say the original seal might not have been fitted correctly by Api ???
What do you mean by rooted PCV valve ? I have the breather pipes routed into a catch tank if thats what you mean ?

I helped him to change the seal on saturday morning, and when I left him we had just dropped the engine back into the bay and lined up the gearbox.
For fitting the seal, we couldn't find anything that would fit it correctly, so I came up with using the old seal to sit over the new 1 and tap it in gently, doing it that way ment there should have been no damage to the new seal, just took a little while to make sure it was 100% level all round and seated correctly.
