stopped twice with a small plate on the front and "advised" to get it swapped. Third time I got fined £30.00 on the way to pick my pizza up. By the time I got to the take away the food was clap cold and went in the bin.
Decided the correct plates should go back on straight away and had to make do with a Pot Noodle

I have a black car now and I had thought about the black plates with silver lettering. Don't think I could be @r$ed with the hassle though so probably never bother. On the Scoob I had a 90% size, correct font and spacing but with no borders, text or logo's on the front, oversized on the rear (to cover those holes in the bumper (03) with correct font, spacing and WYIOC logo where the GB is supposed to be. They both however had 3d carbon effect lettering

Interesting thread. Great to see the police actually do something about illegal plates...
It's restored a bit of faith

I have a front plate which is smaller than standard in length (5 characters)and conforms with the law. The letters are correct size, and there is 11mm space on all sides. The BS AU 145d standard for plates only applies to cars registered after 2001.

I've learned my lessons. Don't mess up with your plate. It will cost you more than you ever imagine. But, I'm still glad I did. At least, I was part of a trend.

The law states the requirements of a legal plate very clearly, eg 10mm clear space around all letters (I think its 10mm), font size, stroke width, spacing, etc etc yet almost every plate you see willl have either a black line or dealer's logo within this 10mm area at least.

But the rules for MOT testing are quite different - basically, if the tester thinks the plate reads like it's supposed to, it's a pass. My plate is technically illegal in a few small ways, but reads right when you look at it. Last MOT, the tester didn't even ask to see my 'legal' plates, let alone fit them

Richard.

PS I think plod is only bothered if their video can't read the correct number, whether it's technically illegal or not. I've never been pulled.
