You're probably right Paul, when did any politician ever get a budget or tender right, just look at the Scottish Parliament. However the Olympics is going ahead so please, please, please can't we all get behind it and make it into a really fantastic event.

paul, i am behind it. i thinks it's brilliant we won the bid and it's a fantastic shot in the arm for east london and the national trickledown will be significant.
that isn't the point of this thread: the point of this thread is that by either incompetence or dishonesty, our government has YET AGAIN, made a total pig's ear of adminstering a capital project.
NATS. Dome. New Wembley. NHS Net. now the Olympics.
don't you tire of being told one thing repeatedly, with ministers going on the record with categoric reassurances, only to find out they were either negligently cavalier or lying about the finances?
it's your money, our money for chrissakes, not theirs: don't you care they appear to have no idea how to manage it? do you have any idea how unacceptable and arguably illegal such behaviour would be in the private business sector where many of us - and maybe you - work?

Secondly on the subject of governemnt incompetance. I'm 37 and frankly have seen it all before. I look after myself and my family and am past caring about politicians. In fact i dont waste my time even listening to them,so yes you're probably right. Personally i dont give a $hit about them. Just dont let this spoil what could be a fantastic event.
(New Wembley, wasn't that a contract between the FA and Multiiplex,i dont think the overspend will come from the public purse, but i may be wrong)

Tell me where any other city that has hosted the Olympics has massively benefited? Did they boost tourism? Urban renewal? Did they put the city on the map? Help local suppliers? If you look into it, the answer is generally no, not really. Most are lying as wasted space. Baseball anyone? This will be another white elephant of limited benefit to most of the nation.

Sydney and Barcelona. How do you know it never helped local suppliers?

I'm glad you're behind it cos like i said, when the time comes it'll be fantastic. To be actually able to go down and take your kids (if you have any) to the Olympics will be a once in a lifetime event and with the nature of it,preliminaries, first rounds etc, there will be some easy to get and cheap tickets available.

man, don't give up. i'm 39 & i've seen it all before as you have. but if we lose our ethics and morals, what are we? uncivilised is the answer.
have a good weekend nonetheless!

Paulr,
The massive cost of this junket which has to be met from Lottery funding thus meaning that really good causes will go short and extra council taxes etc which will affect many many people very badly just cannot be justified.
I agree that the Olympics is a grand occasion as far as the actual sport is concerned, but far too much money is thrown away on aspects which are not valid in respect of the games and is also wasted on trying to outdo the last country to hold them.
We have been led up the garden path by these incompetents and they should be taken to task properly for doing that. The statement that the Lottery will be refunded is to be taken with a pinch of salt, and where would that money come from anyway, if not us?

the government didn't expect to win it so didn't spend the proper time doing the maths, france had a convenient riot to put the selectors off when they realised what a mess they would be buying into.
we won't win **** all beacuse there's no money to teach kids properly (not that most can be arsed anyway)
we'll be lucky if it's all done on time, greece pulled it out of the hat at the last second and we as a country can't do that.
normal people won't gain out of it, the land will be sold off to developers for high end properties and that money has no chance of finding it's way back into our pockets. any housing will given to spongers and asylum cheaters.
as already stated, the final figure will rise again.
in short, i'm not too keen on the idea

I haven't and wont give up,no worries there. However any youthfull optimism i had as a teenager that politicians can either make dramatic changes to society,or are people of the highest integrity has sadly faded. I devote my energies elsewhere.
