Changed my name a few years back. Very easy to do online with a deed poll organisation and cost about £15.
I took the opportunity to give myself a much desired middle name at the time, not realising my initials would now be Y.E.S.

Still here, and still thinking about it. It's not a decision to be taken lightly, my biggest concern is shunning the members of the family who aren't to blame, but I might still do it at some point.

I did some reading up about this, apparently there's no problem changing your name to the same as any famous person or film charactor etc, as long as you don't then try to misrepresent yourself as that person.

Yes I gather you can just unilaterally change your name, and start using a new one. But it has to be witnessed by a solicitor etc if you want the new name on your passport, driving license etc. Most places who do name changes also sell you certified copies of the name change declaration, so you can send one off to each institution you need to change your name with.

Sounds pretty easy actually, it's more the psychological impact I'm worried about - both on myself and on some members of my family.

I haven't had too many really sensible ideas yet. My birthday is on 'Burns Day' (25th Jan) so I could change it to Burns, which is relatively non-freakish.

Hmmm, Mr Burns.... excellent.

No solicitors were needed with mine. The bottom line is the certificate and the fact that you tell several highly regarded authorities. The more people you tell, the more solid it becomes.
I can empathise with the emotional side of things, I did it to get away from my married/divorced name. A new begining. It was very strange at first to go with the new name both spoken and written, but it soon became mine and now it's second nature.
Good luck, with whatever your decision.

Yep - the certificate is your deed poll, and a deed poll is just a deed relating to a change of name... and a deed is just a document executed a particular way (it's witnessed, basically).

So, if you know how to do it, you don't need a lawyer really. On the other hand, a lawyer will do it pretty cheap and it might be the easiest way in practice.

The practicalities are easy if you get the hard bit done... deciding what to do.

fooking brilliant. feel the g's

i remember that episode well.

for the record, my mum amrried when i was 4 my then step father (ahem right abusing tosser), so i kept my orignal name by law or whatever. so the family name was hart (mine was my previous mums name... kitson). both **** names anyway, but when i was 10 i was told i had to change it by my step father. did that and within 7 years they had split up after an unfortunate incident involving a knife, his fist, my wrists and a hospital...

long story short i would like to change my name to something else, not because my surname is a body part, but because im still connected to that ****** in a way. thought about it, but lots of people know me as harty or arghtee in a yorkshire accent, my signatures for both artwork and cheques etc would have to change. all my details with banks debts etc. seems to much hassle. although 'andy my99-uk-turbo-2000' would be an excellent surname, a singature could be a pain in the rs.

Id suggest changing your surname and dropping the middle name, or giving yourself a new one, but do you really want to lose your first name?

Its been with you your entire life, fair enough some tosser that you can't stand anymore picked it, but its yours. If its spelt some weird way why not change the spelling but keep the name.

When I was younger I always wanted to change my first name, but when it was explained to me why it was given I understood. It was a joint desicion between my parents.

I can't abide my Father and was pleased last year when I got married that I could change my name. My Mother divorced my Father when I was 6 but kept his name so I wouldn't feel weird at school. Now I wish she would revert to her maiden name, Im no longer associated to the eejit and I wish she wasn't too.
