My main everyday car is a 150 TDI pd golf.It for me is a perfict eveyday car,but it's nice to get the scooby out and ear that burble every once in a while their's no getting away from it german cars are very good but i would not be without my WRC V/LTD type R, you should try it, get your self a week/end scooby and have the best of both worlds. Perhaps you have gone off scoobs but why come on SN slagging them off

My thoughts exactly Rooby, the shape, sound and bulges of a Scoob just do it for me tbh regardless of the speed or image they have.

The original Audi Quattro was a fantastic car for its day.

Now, comparing Subaru with the present day Audi is really a bit rediculous.

To get an Audi that will compete with a Subaru you have to spend stupid money - and forget about your 2 litre Audi engines. I tried an S3 when considering trading in a standard MY98 Turbo. It was completely horrible. Gutless engine, handling etc. Later I tried an A4 2.5 TD quattro and it was better than the S3 - but, get this, much more expensive than a similar specced Subaru.

For bhp/£, not much beats a Subaru - especially second hand. Try getting a reasonable deal on a second hand fast Audi (and 2 litre ones don't qualify) at a VAG dealership - I've tried and failed.

Thats funny, I thought that as I owned a Subaru I was on the right forum?

People ARE blinkered. Some people still pay full book price for a Type UK STI PPP, then wonder why it is not as quick as a JDM, and cry on here when they try and sell it or PX it the next year and realise it has lost over 10k.

Subaru have had us over a barrel for the last three/four years. They cannot shift the cars so they give us free servicing, free PPP, free fuel. Then whatever little we have gained out of paying the RRP is lost as soon as you drive off the forecourt.

Why do people get insurance loaded up because of PPP, when models that include it as standard WR1 / WRX300 etc have lower premiums? Speaking as someone who has seen Subaru unfold in the last ten years, I think I am in a better position than some to comment on such things. If you look at the overall picture and not just 'how nice the curves look', you will see why some people have chosen to move on...

The sense of occasion you get just sitting in the thing is awesome. You can tell some egghead has spent 45 hours just perfecting the way the coin tray is ejected from the dash when you gently push it. How many Subaru owners have flipped the dash top cubby box open (MY99 etc) only to find the spring has broke and the bloody thing won't stay open? If thats what you call character then a Reliant Robin is characterful because it will blow over in strong winds - NO THANKS
Well, I suppose if sitting in the thing is more important than driving it, then good for you

I'm guessing most subaru drivers don't place such importance on such worthy items as coin trays.

Don;t get me wrong Bluto, I'm not pro subaru in this. My last car was a BMW because the Audis, whilst well made, were dull as dishwater to drive. Crap steering feel, mismatched spring & dampers, generally a poor driving experience.

Lovely to sit in, but not great to drive. Left me completely cold.

I'm shocked that your quattro is faster than a pppd 02 Impreza though.

Oh, and I also doubt your bose stereo was standard spec.

Even Audilover acknowledges that the current A4 lags behind the equivalent BWM's and Mercs.

But what works for you, and all that

And to Add - your S line Special edition would have had a list price with Bose stereo of appx £26,500.

Not that bad value for a nicely specced Audi, but somewhat removed from an 02 reg Impreza.

Think people are missing why the OP got so much hassle.

It was the "I've got rid of my 3 Subarus, I now have an Audi, Subarus suck, Audis rule" type nature of the post that got everyones backs up.

The fact is that the current car is pretty much the same as the Bug as far as basic design goes - Yes, its a car that is almost 7 years old in market terms. I think you'll find thats why Subaru are bringing out a new model. Is the Audi build quality better - yes, probably - but to be honest, switch action doesn't feature that highly on the list of what I look for in a car at the moment; and its not like I'll be playing with it as I'm driving! As long as it doesn't rattle or have panels that fall off I'm not that fussed how its put together.

Has anyone here claimed the Impreza is the greatest car ever built? No.

As for people buying new cars - personally I think anyone who buys a brand new car regardless of make is a bit of a spanner. If you buy a new car and then whine about depreciation you're just an idiot. Plain and simple that one.

Another simple fact is that the Subaru Impreza is a legendary car - and it always will be. The Audi A4, regardless of what random option boxes you've ticked - is not. And never will be.

Yes, an Impreza drinks too much fuel, ride a little stiff, have a big spoiler... But lets face it - if that bothers you buy a bloody diesel Passat.

The only criticisms of the Impreza I've seen are either the plain bloody obvious and have no place coming from someone who knows they're buying a performance car - or entirely subjective at best, and plain stupid and immature at worst, comments like "chavs have them now".

What next? "my elise was crap but my volvo estate is far better because I can put my 3 kids, dog, shopping and new sofa in it.."??

My brother in law just got his Q7 and it has been a hell of a hassle at the dealer, because half of the stuff that he ticked "randomly" did not come with the damn car!!

So much for +50,000£ making any difference.......keep it simple, keep it operational the rest I can live with = Subaru.

No taste some people. When Subaru started the "Impreza thing" its was quite stealthy, exactly as I like my cars. Obviously if you feel the need to draw attention to yourself may I recommend that you parade your local high street in frilly underpants, stockings and a pair of 6" high heels. That is also quite characterful (so I am told).

Okay so what you are saying is the thing I miss about my Subaru(s) is the burble? Nowadays that sound is more common than the sound of your mates breaking wind after a vindaloo and nine pints. "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Subaru. Sorry but the chavs with their loud exhausts have killed it for me.

I enjoyed my Leon Cupra R 225 but as with most VAG performance cars it is a bit dull in some aspects.

Traded it in for a wrx ppp and much more fun

I have now got an STI, a Forester STI. One that will see off pretty much most things. Nobody knows what it is, and people that have an opinion dont like it, which suits me fine.

I also have a 3.2 V6 Audi, and yes, this engine note is as intoxicating as any Subaru.

The comments on an Impreza's depreciation being better than an Audi's is sheer lunacy. Whoever said that must be in cloud cuckoo land. Maybe he should try talking to some MY05/MY06 owners, who have just found out that their cars are worth 12k because you can buy a new WRX at Litchfields for 14.5k...(or thereabouts)

People need to take the blinkers off....

Read the posts correctly you half wit! I NEVER mentioned anything about an chuffing ashtray, it was a COIN tray. I suppose a Subaru doesn't need a coin tray, just put the coins in the door bins you'll not be able to hear them for all the other cabin rattles clicks and buzzes anyway.

VAG cars do everything well but are a bit characterless in my opinion. Im on my fourth one as a day to day car and the scooby is totally different hence the reason its been retained. Both good but in different ways.

If you were bothered about depreciation you wouldnt buy any car (apart from an old hyundai which couldnt depreciate any further).

Well said Nik. Nowhere at the start of this thread did I slag off Subaru as a brand. The point I started putting across before the intellectually challenged morans misread the posts and changed my views to what they wanted to read like a good dose of Chinese whispers was that I still admire the classics but as far as a new purchase is concerned FOR ME the Audi was the better choice. I was pointing out the fact that Audi have quietly improved their cars in terms of driving enjoyment in the last 2 years (post 2005 A4's for example) certainly the s line spec cars. Don't believe all your read, for instance pick up a copy of Autocar and they have not tested a B7 Audi (latest A4 version) only the B6 yet comment in their yellow pages how poor a car it is, its no longer made!!! Not surprisingly they road tested the new S3 the other week and were totally blown away by it saying it was probably the best drivers car have ever built and that includes the awesome RS4. I rest my case. I was as equally surprised when I test drove a new A4 prior to ordering mine. I had worn blinkered rally blue specs for years reading the motoring press and became brain washed about how bad Audi were (maybe they were then I can't comment). I was last on this forum before X ams and things never change. There are the intelligent members still out there but equally there seems to be a growing population of morons, talking of which does PS Lewis still come here?

Look Bluto me ol' mucker, you listen in.

We all did stuff 10 years ago which we would no longer wish to be seen dead doing For you driving a scooby is evident, for others having a mullet hair cut and wearing stonewashed denim might be nearer the mark (no names mentioned )

The fact that our tastes have matured and we have moved on does not give us the right to belittle those that still enjoy such activities. They are only enjoying what we once enjoyed.

It just means that we are now OLD just like our Dads used to seem

Probably you don't listen to music so loud these days and find carpet slippers strangely warm and relaxing.

I hate to break it to you but the Audi is just another sign of the more "distinguished" gentleman - a bit like silver whiskers

LOL@U try growing old gracefully!

The bone hard jiggly ride and the amalgam of tin foil bodywork and brittle plastic, paint which chips if you hit a corn fly at 40mph - oh marvellous, makes for pretty enjoyable Sunday pride polishing doesn't it I hated the way my wagon chipped paint. Every time I washed the car there was a new chip somewhere. When I sold my car on it needed a frontend respray (and a new bonnet due to all the dings). It may have stood the test of time but it looked bloody shabby as a result.

Have you got a drink problem?
