Strange, maybe I've been lucky.

I am on my third Subaru after 9 years of Subaru ownership having previously owned BMWs. Apart from a new engine on the first car (piston slap and re-engined at no cost to me) I have had zero trouble with the cars or dealer service (I wish the I could say the same for the BMWs). I admit the paintwork may not be as thick as on German cars but I have never had a paintwork problem apart from the odd stone chip.

yes, mine rattles too (MY05 sti ppp) but I don't really care. Enjoy your silent Audi, I'm sure its "perfect".

Get a soul, buy an RS4 if you really must, but otherwise, please don't bother, and if you think your Audi is quick, please.... feel free to try and show me next time we meet.

I have got a vr6 golf, audi s3 and a my94 wrx, the best car of the 3 is the scoob simply because it makes me smile everytime i get into it, and thats what cars mean to me, the other two are quality sofas that to be honest that put me to sleep nicely, but then again they do have there uses, that is obviously why i own them!,as for the new s lines, they are just real rs6/rs4/rs2 wannabes and they never will be as good as those three cars, in my opinion of course.

Just had a look through this thread and find it most strange.
The OP has had several Imprezas and now has an Audi - yet it appears he spent over two hours online line last night criticising the Impreza and current owners, and is on again tonight! I think that betrays some deep-seated insecurity and ego issues that will take much more than the purchase of an Audi to sort out! Why not get a life and live it - go on and enjoy your Audi - what's your problem?

I have spent many years in the motor trade and have bought, sold, driven, owned all sorts of cars over the years - from Hillman Imp to S-Class Mercedes. I really don't care what sort of car people drive - its up to them. All this nonsense about what people think and getting 'admiring looks at the garden centre' is absolutely pathetic - are you really that shallow? I can understand it from teenage kids, but not from a mature person.

I have recently ordered a new Impreza from Allbrandsnew. I could, if I wished, go out an buy a new 7-series (like I did in 1999), an RS4 or any number of other cars. But it would be a waste of money. I don't cover a lot of miles at the moment and most of my driving is in congested traffic with the odd thrash down a country lane. I looked at my needs and the Impreza seems to be appropriate. At the moment they are incredible value as EU imports. I know from previous trade experience that they are reliable and well engineered. In terms of depreciation a new import WRX is around £15k OTR. In three years it should be worth £7k or so. That's not a bad loss in £££ terms and less than the Audi would lose over the same time period. I really don't care what image they have and I don't need the "approval" of other people - I have the self-confidence to be my own person and don't need a car to prop up my ego.

One thing that years working in the motor trade have taught me is that cars are basically a waste of money - they all depreciate like the clappers and cost a fortune to run. I now prefer to put money into enjoying life rather than expensive depreciating assets. With an Impreza I can still have a nice to drive car at a bargain price and enjoy three long-haul family holidays this year. That's better for me than an expensive badge on the driveway.

Oh yes, you've just reminded me. I must press the spanner button on the dash to remind me when the next service is due (another 18 months I think and I have had her for 4 months!). What really got my goat with Subaru was there endless need for fuel, servicing (every 10,000 miles, yawn), no wonder they tried to tempt buyers with free servicing, after the "free fuel for a year" and "free servicing" Dealers must see you guys coming lol, filling their coffers with your hard earned cash. pmsl

Oh dear, we have a pretending psychiatrist on Scoobynet!!! Your response is riddled with contradiction. Please re - read it and analyse exactly what you are saying Don't try and belittle ME with pointless clap trap about being in the motor trade and being able to afford any car you choose either, I agree with your sentiments about buying an RS4, I do not want to waste that amount of money on a car which will only be usable 10% of the time on our roads, that is what I decided to choose a "poverty spec s line model" . Last year I had a perception that Golden Brown would increase road fund duty from £210 to twice that, I can read him like a book that was another reason I chose the 2 litre as its in the lower band. If YOU don't like wasting money on cars why the hell do you drive a car which drinks fuel like a tramp would consume whisky at a distillery and costs a small fortune to insure and maintain??? You hit the spot with the point about congestion, why waste money on higher road fund, fuel and insurance when you can crawl at the same speed as everyone else but in a car which is nicer to sit in? You have obviously missed my rather obscure humour in the point about the garden centre, read the thread properly, grab a can from your fridge and chill out.

Don't take life too seriously, d1ck.

What little credibility you had is fast disappearing with comments like these. Your Audi is undeniably a nice car, I think you've made that quite clear once or twice. However equally for us Subaru owners, we are entitled to be passionate and proud of our cars. I am sure a man of your considerable experience is familiar with the tale of The Emperor's New Clothes, conversely if you're now just being obstinate for the hell of it then more the fool you.

couldn't resist adding my two-penneth worth for what it's worth

I'm really lucky as I run a WRX-PPP and S-Line Audi (Co. Car) so have 1st hand experience of both. Ok so there's no denying that the Audi really is a classy looking Golf and built well, yep it's a diesel and that's where it really comes in, oh and it's screwed together well - so what!....but given the choice (stuffing Gorden's tax increases right up his *****) it'd be the Scoob any time!

There is nothing for the money that can compete with the 4-pot burble, the big pipe boom and best of all the look on Boxster drivers faces as you dissappear in front of them! And so what if we are attracting a "Chav" image, we acknowledge one another, as we know just what a great car we are driving. Agreed the game has moved on, but as it did from the 80's Quattro, 90's Cossie, but they are still regarded as great cars - for those who know...

Oh and how they love the Audi down at the 'garden centre' but I can't resist turning up with a loud burble, glaring Gold alloys - oh and THAT wing!

Thoughts added.

Quite right, in my mind I'm still 25, but my body says otherwise! There is nothing wrong with maturing.....everyone has to do it eventually. Let the youngsters have their fun (how condescending does that sound LOL), eventually their life might contain more than Subarus and this forum.

When I had my first Turbo 2000, I was out driving it, not sitting in front of a computer being a keyboard hero after just registering.....

You made a few points in your original post, that were not very accurate:
Fact: today Golden Brown put that rate up to £400
No he didn't, he put it up to £300. I don't suppose it saves you much per year having the Audi.

In conclusion Subaru need to catch up. The competition is now very very fierce. Put away your WRC blue tinted spectacles (they never win any rallies now anyway so whats the point) and go and test drive one of these fine cars:
I think that suggesting that the people, who still believe the Impreza is a good car, are wearing tinted spectacles, is slagging off the brand. If you had a point, I'd just agree with you, but to then suggest 2 Golfs as better drivers cars (given that you know we own Imprezas because we think they are good drivers cars), shows that you are talking nonsense.

let me tell you this, my new Audi is faster both in a straight line and in the wet AND around the Suffolk countryside than my previous MY02 prodrive wagon.
This was one of your other original points, and I just don't believe you. I suggest it is you that has tinted spectacles.

If I were your age, I think I too would choose the Audi over a Subaru. I'm amazed you've had Imprezas as long as you have. But they are very different cars. If you pick any price bracket, neither the Golf or Audi would have a chance of keeping up with an Impreza.

Personally I'd only buy an Audi if I had 50 grand to spare for an RS4/6.

Each to his/her own i spose.

He sounds a bit like my dad, he's got an audi and loves it too, the build quality etc, but it's a car, not a faberge ****ing egg, And besides, old balding fat greying retired businessmen have no place in cars of this type, gives younger drivers a bad name, look what partridge did to lexus. Enjoy your audi and the cointray, and farewell (p.s. because someone is a noob, doesn't mean they are new at computers, forums, life, etc, etc so you can take your 5yr membership certificate down off the wall and put a stobart 'emily' pic there instead)

I dont really get this, you can get a brand new WRX for less than £15000, the audi in question here is over £25000 new. It has less power, and it weighs more (WRX estate 1425kg vs avant 1450-1485 pending on sources).

Yes the audi will be more refined.

But the whole point of a subaru is fantastic performance for bugger all money. 15 years ago you'd need to spend 100k to get a car that goes as well as a 15k subaru does today. Your also buying into something you can tune, a good subaru will fetch 350bhp for reasonable money which would leave the audi for dead.

The bottom line is they are 2 completely different cars, and are really in different price brackets. If you want to pay the VAG workers for doing 30 hour weeks for full pay (which is what goes on according to a BBC report) and then kid yourself into thinking that your paying for something 'better' then thats fine. Yes the engineering is good, yes the interiors are pretty and the drive is refined, but subaru put a package together for £15k which would pretty much see anything under 30k from germany off over proper timed course - thats impressive engineering to me. For some people the extra 15k is worth it for the interior and the badge. I dont give a monkeys what the badge says as long as the car goes nicely.

The audi A4 is not new technology. The all new, brand new chassied A4 is arriving in september. The gap between brands will widen even further, and audi will cement their positions as king of the hill. No other manufacturer has yet been able to make a system with more traction than quattro.
