This 2008 model is complete poo. The whole point of an Impreza is it is a proper saloon - but something really useful would have been an eco-high performance diesel STi saloon variant that packs a useful strong torque punch but with better economy and lower emmissions.

A couple of thoughts:
1) If, as has been widely rumoured, there's to be no WRX, why does the rear view pic show the car with a WRX badge?
2) The swoopy grille is ghastly, but the STi version (Japanese mag pic on German website) doesn't look too bad.
Anyone?

Subaru should have stuck with a sedan style body as now there's no sedan or wagon which is how imprezas should always be.
This model should have been given a different name like "New subaru justy" etc that way they dont ruin the Impreza name which has been a good seller for over a decade,
Also subaru could have used the new hatch model for rallying and those who like the Hatch have the choice and impreza buyers remain unaffected.

It comes to something when Kia make a more desirable looking car: 2006 Kia Pro Cee'D Concept Front Corner Photo - Automobile Magazine
Who would have thought that the photochopped pictures (mostly of a Mazda 3 ) where actually true (apart from the bulldog chewing a wasp grill )

Been watching the threads of the new Impreza with interest in anticipation of an official STI variant picture, and i have to say i really like the pic above, if it's genuine.
I think any radical change over any car model, especailly something with such a history as the beloved Impreza, is going to be strange for a while, but when we start seeing more of these models around, they will grow to be loved. Maybe there's a whole new generation of 5dr Impreza owners yet to be captured, that will ensure the 5dr's success in future months/years.
I believe that the hardcore Impreza lovers amongst us (and yes, I am one(!)) will not be convinced until Prodrive start using the hatchback for the WRC campaign (BTW - any news yet on when they will introduce it???). Although the current and past STI models are the closest we can get to a road-going version of the WRC models, the WRCs are still far more radical than any road model available to the public (22B being the closest ever that has been on sale, however!).
So, to summarise, if the pic of the STI 5dr hatch above is genuine, then i want one. Just look at that rear end with the massive rear venturi underneath - sex on wheels.
And give it a year or so, especially after Prodrive make one for the WRC, more here will too. It's also bound to handle better than the Evo X (i use this example simply because the Lancer Evos have always been the closest rival for Imprezas), becasue of the shorterrear overhang, plus the fact that it's still a Subaru!!!!
Bring it on

But if they're so cheap over there why the huge markup on imports from places like litchfield. i.e. MY07 JDM WRX STi is £27K. Surely it doesn't cost that much to get it here, sva'd and a bit for them...

At the end of the day though, the actual cost of a Litchfield JDM isn't that much more (if at all) than a UK version, which in comparison are nowhere near as much VALUE for your money, IMO. Plus, Iain gives full warranties and the service is outstanding.

You can buy a brand new STi Spec C from Japan for around 3.4 million Yen(£14K), duty, VAT, shipping and insurance brings up to about £19-20K, then the rest goes on the SVA preparation and test. Could probably be road legal and drivable for around £22K. But, bear in mind that Ian and other importers give you tracker/Sat Nav/warrenty/remap etc it's not actually that bad a deal!
The getting it landed at the docks is the easy bit, SVA testing is the hard part!

You'd be surprised at the actual cost of getting an import in and registered PROPERLY. Besides this, it's a business Iain Litchfield is running, not a charity!!

But someone stated above that a JDM WRX costs aprox 11K over in Japan... Guess i was quite shocked that the import costs and a bit of markup ends up over doubling its cost to a uk consumer...
I always thought it was 'the cheaper but riskier' option, obviously i was wrong

New Shape on Sale in Japan

Personally, if it has a 2.5 Turbo, I don't care what they call it. If I wanted something pretty to look at, I would have bought an Alfa.
But if you want something that is quick, cheap and reliable, you won't go wrong with a Subaru.
