Seems this topic is getting rather emotive rather quickly.
Both sides of the argument have merit. Disabled people do need some assistance to get around, and a car scheme is good. However, as pointed out above, its massively abused.
We know of several people who just use it as a form of free motoring. They managed to just qualify for support, and have just enough of the "right" evidence to stop them from getting kicked off from the scheme. Then they go out dancing
Any system can be abused, but at the end of the day I really do not see why they should be given new cars. Nothing wrong with something a couple of years old that is not going to depreciate so hard. In fact, I think they should only be given a car in exceptional circumstances. Such as being medically capable of driving, but needing to attend medical appointments where methods of public transport are inappropriate.
I think the last point to make is that I am both young, and unable to work due to disability. It should also be pointed out that although I probably qualify for the scheme there is no way I am going to make use of it. I worked hard before being unwell, I run a classic scoob from my savings (not worked for more than 5 years). I could easily run a basic car from current benefits, why should I be gifted a new vehicle every couple of years? Taxis, trains, buses, or run your own transport.

I say put the tax on fuel and do away with road tax all together, that way who ever uses the roads more pays more or you buy an economical car.
I also think that there should be a £20 access tax on foreign wagons and cars so that as they get off the ferries they pay towards our economy.
Has anyone noticed the rising number of Polish/Czech plated cars driving around, these don't pay our road tax and I bet a lot are not even insured.
They are supposed to register the vehicle if it is staying in the country. Ye Right, think not. Will drive it till it dies.
On disability living I am sitting on fence due to both my sisters claim it due to muscle wasting disease (M.D)and I too have it so the tests show. What I do find odd is that my eldest sister is a Head Teacher and she is mobile all be it slowly and earns a good salary. Yet gets £££ every month towards her Mini Cooper Cab even she thinks its stupid, but due to certain people who shouldnt get it, getting it she says stuff it.
I too will (might have to one day) look in to this due to it looks like free money..................
I play football and am mobile but with this disease would qualify, but due to my present capabilities being ok I dont. I work and pay my way like most people on here and see disability allowance as something that is there for come the day that I may not be able to work, but until that day I will resist the free money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mmmmmmmmmmmm???????? remap paid for by everyone else??? free car tax??? Wheres them forms??

Don't think anyone on here has grasped the basics on this subject.
ROAD TAX SHOULD MEAN ROAD TAX!!!!
Like most people on here i own a Subaru a 05 WRX (which sits in group f for road tax). The only reason that I have such a car is the fact that I have worked every day since leaving school (well been employed). Why should i be penalised more just cause I own a nice car. The goverment got more money off me though VAT the day I bought it, they get more money off me every time I stop at the garage to fill up through fuel duty but still not content with that they now want more money off me through road tax why??? Like most cars in this country I have only got 4 wheels touching the road and road tax is meant for the up keep of our road network anyway(if you can call it that) it is not to counter the carbon emissions.
Wots next 90p a litre of U/L if you drive a Fiesta, but sorry you drive a larger car so it will cost you £5.
Gordon Brown wants to be the next PM, well i think that he has just shot himself in the foot with this one, PITY IT WASN'T IN THE HEAD

And I bet that for 95% of the electorate, taxing thirsty cars is probably the most popular thing Brown has done in this last budget.

[quote=Hoppy;6777494]So tax on booze and **** should be spent on alcoholics and people with self-induced lung cancer? Tax is tax - it all goes into the same kitty.

The only people that will be happy with it is all the lazy b***ards, criminals and illegal immigrants that this country now seems to suck up to, they will still be able to go to the pub, bookies hang around on street corners laughing at us, while the goverment are fleecing the good honest people that put them in power in the first place.

I own a MY05 STi (registered 31st March 2006) meaning that i am liable for the £300 tax. I have no issues with paying this amount because it would be a waste of my time if i did.
I do think the new system is flawed in the sense that many of the 'Gas Guzzulers' they are trying to penalise were registered before the 23rd March 2006 cut off date meaning it will probably have little effect on anything. My opinion would be one in the sense that Band F should be increased further and perhaps Band G slightly lower (net effect is cash neutral budget.. less ££ from G and more from F = same ££ total tax over 12mnths to treasurey) This move would also be likely to have a larger effect on Co2 emmissions ejected from cars within the UK.

I dont mind paying what I pay to own my car but I object to the over inflated above inflation rises on the back of some carbon emission bollocks and green tax crap...
I am being lied to and unfairly treated as my car makes no more difference to global warming than a pedal bike...

Does anybody actually believe the tax increase is to really cut our emissions. i think Brown has merely jumped on the Green bandwagon and used it to screw us yet again. The motorist is the easiest target as u simply have to pay up. If he was serious about emmisions he would penalise the manufacturers not the people who have already bought their cars. I know of nobody who is actually going to give up their 'gas guzzler'. So the real benefit is......? Oh its the Chancellors coffers is it not?! The sooner we vote this crazy lot out the better. We must be the most heavily taxed nation in the civilised (?) world. All to pay for a nation that has too many people scrounging out of the kitty, and too many people in the country who should not be here draining our resources!!

Some sensible post here well from post 33 onwards !! I think the main problem (s) people have with the increase that its way out of line with inflation, the Band G limit is too low, it actually does nothing to decrease carbon emmisions, it simply taxing those who have worked hard and decided they want to do better. And is this increase in road tax going to result in a better road system - No its only going to get worse in my eyes !

Along the same lines of what been mentioned above, my biggest bugbear about these tax increases is that it has absolutely naff all to do with the environment, I mean why split the fee because the year of registration for starters??
The only way of fair motor taxation is to base it on emission levels and mileage.
For example over the past year I've only driven 2500 miles in my STi, however if you took a 1.6 Focus driving 12,000 miles per year who's actually worse for the environment?? So why penalise me for taking the bus more and walking??
The thing is if I had to pay £400 per year for tax, that 10 minute walk down to shop at the moment would turn back into a 1 minute drive to get my monies worth!

The problem with paying all the tax is they rob you and say there are going to use it to repair roads and and emmisions absolute crap the roads are shiiiite and then they raise your council tax and tell you the costs have gone up for police and fire service ya when you call them they don't come when you don't want them they are there???It does not mater how much we complain they will always hit us in the pocket.I have been of work for 6mths now with a cracked spine and collar bone also have MS I have been trying to get help I have been on my own fitting the system now for 4mths and getting no where.but yet if you come here from another country they will give you everything and pay ya to it is crap?? I am done bitchin now

Private company initiatives work better, but, like any enterprise, they are in it to make money, so it falls to us, consumers, to pay for making the Earth a cleaner place (again, accepting that taxes are supposed to do that in the first place).
People will always be stiffed, apparently this is the 21st century definition of democracy.
I for one plan on leaving the UK. If they can't give back to me as a citizen, then **** them, I'll move elsewhere and take my family with me. Let some Polish/Albanian/Romanian immigrant come here, work my job for a third of what I would, send all his money home out of the UK, get pissed and drive his uninsured/untaxed car into a small child playing in the street and then get sent to prison and win the Lottery.
Sorry, but the UK is not worth fighting for. Its a ****hole, and I once considered myself proud to be English. Now if a foreigner asks me where I'm from, I just say Europe.
Thanks
Matt

OK hate to let the facts get in the way of a good rant, but here goes.
1. The cost of motoring has gone down (in real terms) over the last 10 years.
2. The amount of 'green' tax collected has gone down over the past 10 years.
3. Tax burden in the UK is just about the EU average
4. You are probably better now than before the budget (everyone seems to have forgotten the 2p cut in the basic rate of tax)
So why all the moaning?

Am I the only one on here who's fed up reading threads about car tax going up? Haven't you people heard of 'put up or shut up'? Either stop whining and DO something about it, or keep quiet and accept it.
It never ceases to amaze me how some SNers think they're driving city runabouts and seem to believe that a fast car can be cheap to run. You want cheap motoring and no surprises? Drive a 1.0 Fiesta. You want driving thrills? Own a Scoob, get used to putting your hand in your pocket and get over it.
You don't like it? Get a different car. You don't like government policies? Don't vote for them again. But don't be so naive as to think that thirsty fast cars will not be taxed to the hilt in years to come. Get used to it.

The trouble is there are far too many people like this in the UK who are happy to get screwed by the govt. It wouldn't happen in France
WE live in a democracy did you know?

Petrol duty was frozen for at least 5 years (during which price fell
Insurance costs a way down (assuming you're not 17 years old)
The cost of cars themselves in absolute terms has remained largely unchanged (due to increased competition)
Check it out, in real terms owning a car is cheaper now than 10 years ago.
Infact according to the DOT cost of car ownership has gone down by 11% in real terms sine 1975, whilst the cost of public transport has gone up by 65%

Any one under 45 years will be called up to fight for queen and country.
Lets see all the British wanabees go home then.
Can use The Green Tax to help fight the war.
