^^ What he said.... *sings* "All we are saying is give peace a chance...."
And I'd like an apology from the viking hoards of Norway for all oppression and stress my direct descendent's suffered by raping, pillaging and just being plain old rude ......£10K should suffice, in cash, thanks in advance

And I'd like a Swedish blonde so I can return the favour to the Vikings !
So DCI, how do you plead ? Were you, or were you not, on Sunday 25th March 2007, watching the telly programme about the FBI "investigation" during the early 70s into John Lennon ? And like me, you can't get that damned song out of your head !

I heard one person describe slavery as the back holocaust over the weekend.
This happened 200 years ago.
The British were instrumental in bringing this to an end.
a lot of Africans where involved and made money selling slaves (usually captured or kidnapped) from other tribes.
I for one am not responsible ort feel any guilt for slavery and the UK’s involvement. I was not around 200 years ago!
Yes, slavery was wrong, and what happened in a lot of cases was terrible and inhumane. no doubt abut that.
It was 200 years ago. It is best remembered (so it does ot happen again) and left in the past where it belongs.
Should reparations be paid, no and I think this is just stirring up more opportunities for bad feelings on both sides. How could you work out just who this should be paid to anyway. Relations of the people who suffered, the now governments?
To recognise happened this and respect this is enough IMHO!
People need to look forward, blaming some sections of societies ill’s and problems is an easy way out of taking responsibility by those sections of the community.
There are a lot of problems and some parts of society should stop focusing on the past and start to look at now and the future!
My immediate boss (client services director) is a 50+ y/o Jamaican, he is one of the smartest nicest, creative and most trustworthy (and best dressed) people I know. He has two grown up children, both professionals. He started from nothing with working class parents but they came to work and be good people and contribute.
He has no hang ups about being black or uses this as an excuse, he is a self made man. At closer to 55 he grew up in an age of racism in the UK (that I do feel we do not have now) and he just got on with it.
Yes, I know that there is still racism in the UK and this is not helped by this government opening us up to anyone who wants to come to the UK for whatever reason. The answer is not to fulfil the stereotype that some racists have and get over it and get on with life and making something on yourself.
There are opportunities for people that want to work, want to try and want to get on and have the drive and ability to do so and I get sick and tired of hearing excuses as to why not!
We can all find excuses as to why things go wrong and why we do succeed, it is a shame some people do not put as much effort in trying to succeed.
Oh and before I get called a racist I judge people on what sort of person they are and how they act and not colour, race or religion.

Ah the lovely "pay us because our grandparents were slaves" scenario, so beloved of a quite a few black people in the US. Sorry but I really don't see why, unless you yourself were a slave, that you should demain reparations. It happened, we're not denying that, but it's in the past, move on.
Maybe we should enslave those who are harping on about wanting reparations and let them experience it first hand and actually give them a reason to complain, rather than thinking that because it happend to my grandfather that I should be entitled to something.
Interesting comment about the Romans, might be worth a shot, in this mad and crazy PC and Human Rights world we live in today there is quite possibly a case to be had. Then again we're white and we cannot possibly be victims of racism because of that. It is always the white man who is bad isn't it. It's never the black man, who might, just might have sold his brethern into slavery to make some money in the first place, but we'll overlook that possible fact and paint the white man as the bad man.

As for slavery it hasnt been abolished. There are 220 million slaves in the world, and that figure doesnt even count adults.
One thing though markus, jews got reparitions, some other race which I cant think of right now got reparations so in theory if we are gonna be fair, blacks should have got reparations.
Hell there was a mounting holocaust against blacks during hitlers reign aswell, why didnt the black people from then get repartions like the jews?

According to some study, if they worked out all the slaves wages, and the intereset they would have earned over the odd centuries that they were enslaved there is enough money owed to actually wipe out africas debt to the western world.

Second that - great point.
Nobody gives you anything on a plate - white, black, brown whatever... forget 200 years ago - this is the here and now and it's not my fault some sections of society are too cool to go to school and earn an honest living.
**** em and following on from that good point - wonder what the opportunities are like for the average African in Africa. They should be positively embracing what this country offers - not stomping around in a huff because you don't get anything for nuffink and having respekt on the street doesn't translate into real life success.
I'm sick of being told I need to feel guilty about something and that I owe the world a favour.
