Yes we would have jumped at the chance as we would be well p'd off with them, the whole situation and them skulging around in our manor...

Just as expected Chris.

I particularly liked this quote:

"Iranian TV has said it expected some of the British sailors would come under pressure from the UK government when they returned home to change their story."

FFS !

Yes - my post on the Hamas kidnapping of an Israeli soldier was vaped for one. Nothing contentious in it really - just a polite political opinion I hope?

Can we have an explanation mods - just a on liner maybe?

Odd - I can still see it on the previous page... unless there's another one that I didn't see before that is?

I have just checked that out. I am still puzzled over those news tv shots I saw of several of the soldiers laughing and joking with Ahmadinejad as they all shook hands once their release had been announced. Again edited highlights designed for max Iranian propaganda, but it just doesnt all ring true to me.

There are an awful lot of porkies flying about on all sides I'm afraid - either that or I'm much more cynical than I thought!

I should say I have nothing but respect for the soldiers - its the briefing, leadership and armed forces policy in such situations I am questioning.

Nah there was another after it where I was wondering if the act of taking another country's soldier is as good as declaring war.

Sounds like they fared no worse than Guantanomo bay inmates or even the average US prison inmate.

Rough handling? What do they expect?

The statement they have just read was equally prepared by the UK Govt as their statement in Iran was prepared by the UK government.

So at the time they were caught they all though to themselves - "Ooo, let's not fight, it'll cause an escalation and a major international event"

Whilst your post is quite amusing, I suspect that you underestimate how frightening it would be to be locked up on your own in a cell in a Tehran prison.

Blindfolded, lined up against a wall. Weapons cocked, they thought they were about to meet God (or whoever !).

Rather worse than a wedgie.

but thats not actually the case - in fact one of the saliors interviewed on sky straight after the official press conference said he did NOT think his life was in danger - he even went as far as to say some of them were letting their imaginations get themselves worked up.

they were taken prisoner by Iran and show to the worlds media - they werent taken by some nutter group in Iraq and held in a secret terrorist bunker. While they prob thought the hole thing was a bit ****e i get the impression they had no doubt they would end up home at some point.

the UK media has spun this on their behalf, fair enough - its our country but i think its fair to say your average Iraqi prisoner gets treated just as "badly"

At the end of the day Iran come out on top - the patrols in that area have stopped and the prisoners were released on their terms.

I actually found the press conference "excuses" a little embarrassing for them - if they had said "i was poohing my pants so i said want they wanted" then fair enough but all this "ahhh...but we actually said we were APPARENTLY in Iranian waters" stuff is not correct and sounds like kids in school trying to get out of whatever naughty thing they have said!
