car is brought now and will be picking up this weekend, i have allowed some money for a rebuild

I suppose the acid test for this is classic versus bug eye for engines going. I'll wager that cars of a similar age and mileage that there have been far more rebuilds for classics than new shapes. It's not scaremongering at all
