How to get 400ish bhp??
#61
sorry to throw this in, some of us are just lucky I Guess
Bearing in mind the car did already have APS DR725 FMIC, & 3" sports cat exhaust, I managed to get it up to 420 bhp & 385lb/ft for £2600,
Perrin Rotated mount turbo kit £1500 (comes with everything you need including Garrett GT 30) needed some special mods which I done myself at no cost to fit)
650cc Sards £250
Headers £250
Remap £400
Equal fuel rails £200

That`s cheap for a GT 30 KIT......

The kit was only $2200 dollars when I bought it, the rest was shipping & taxes, the kits retail for around $3200 now, but if you know the right people you can get 20% off of that. would only recommend it if your brave though!!!

That depends on you and how you feel for looks wise and newness. You`ve said you`d like something newish so an STI 03/ TO PRESENT I GUESS. I went for the classic version 6 RA, mainly cus i prefer this shape, plus it`s a limited addition and they go like stink...
If you can, try and test drive several before you make your mind up, you`ll be suprised how quick the R/ RA get to 100mph.. especially with a nice little map

Yeah and the classic shape is cheaper! But ive had a classic shape wrx b4, loved the car but never modded it.
But if I bought a newer wrx could I still mod it to be a fast 0-100 car or would a sti still be the better option??
Thanks staffi

I`d say yes of course, but you have to remeber, the R/ RA are built for quick acceleration, plus they only weigh about 1170-1270 kg...

I've found this thread pretty late but I believe from what I've read on here if your not too concerned with the 400 mark, just want to get very close to it then standard internals should be fine. 911's ver 3 sti is something like 380/360 on stnadard internals with a bigger turbo and a few sensible mods with a remap. If you can get this out of a ver.3 sti then a newage sti should be more than capable of this.
Pretty sure a few on here like David Wallis have run standard UK classic internals at 400bhp with sensible mods.
David API makes a good point when he says you will be at the limit at 400bhp, others on here have shown its possible and often reliable but you do run the risk of blowing your engine.
I'd say make some sensible mods and aim for high 3xx's.

These short geared wonder cars can be a PITA when you tune them because they get through the gears far too quickly that you are always throwing gears at them. My old classic with 2.5/GT30/UK 6 speed was silly - overtake a long vehicle on a back road using the full performance available and you would make 2 or 3 gear changes on the wrong side of the road before you'd passed it. Thankfully Subaru have lengthened the gearing on the more recent 6 speeds. Same goes for track use or quarter mile IMHO.

Does this car have to be 400bhp? i mean it seems people are obsessed with bhp (nowt wrong with that to a certain degree) which is ok if you are competing etc.
if you want a nice quick road car then dont discount having a 380 or even a 360 bhp beastie, cost you loads less and be lovely to drive on the road.
You can always bulls**t them in the pub and tell its 400 brake.
A few Smacs members are running late STi's with 360 ish bhp and i drove Immy's (PCM) 380bhp Spec C a few weeks ago and it was everything i would look for in a road going Scooby, fast and torquey, just a nice nice drive.
My advice go for a JDM or better still a Spec C and go for 360-380 trust me you'll be satisfied.
for a while anyway

thing is chief as much as i love scooby`s, i still cannot get over how my evo m8`s (adam) fq340mr went around bedford autodrome t`other day, i have done as much as i can to make me scooby handle better, but as i was following him arond the track i could not help but notice how planted his car was, he had one wheel in the air on quite a few corners and the ffin thing still was unsettled, i know a few will kick up a stink when i post this but if i had the money i would defo buy an evo it is just so much more than just a road car!

On the road, it'd be better to have a responsive car with a nice wide powerband and 330-350 bhp than something with most of the fireworks at the top end pushing out 400+ bhp. I'm not entrely convinced the latter would be any quicker point to point- it might even be slower. I'm fairly sure there is a law of diminshing returns beyond a certain bhp level as far as road driving is concerned.
Competition and pub bragging rights, of course, is a different matter!

I think David covered it earlier: there is a difference between what a tuner might be happy running on their car and what they'd be comfortable with on a customer's car. If they break it, it's an inconvenience, but they can fix it much more easily and inexpensively than Joe Blogs, who will have to get the job professionally done at considerable expense.

LOL. Yep, that's the most important bit !
I agree entirely re the useability of a wide power band in a daily driver.

MMM I really need to have a drive of the newer scoobys. As said I had a classic b4, but my Evo is better than that, just my opinion tho, great car, and has the best looks, but the EVO for me has brilliant handling, as said b4 I have a lot to think about!
#86
I don`t think you REALLY know what you`re doing yet?? you keep on going back to how good the Evo is, therefore keep it, if it does all you want/need, plus you`ve got your magic 400bhp you`re after already...just my opinion
#87
Yeah right enough. I think its down to looks more than power. There is somthing about a scoobys look but I have an EVO and I like the drive I get with it.
But thanks anyway guys. I must say aswell there dont seem to be so much t**sers on here as the MLR. Thanks
