Virginia Gun Massacre

I think the real culprit here is the fact that America has allowed immigrants from South Korea to enter the country and study at the universities.
I believe they should ban all South Koreans from entering the US, and then deport all South Koreans back to their homeland.
That way, there will never be another massacre by a South Korean at a school in the US.
(If you think the above is ridiculous, it's about as stupid as banning all firearms which most of you nanny state Brits want to do)

the americans are where they are; 200m odd legal personal firearms are embedded in their culture following 230 years of acceptance. that's a lot of social momentum.
a blanket ban is physically unworkable and right or wrong, would be anti-constitutional and electorally unacceptable for many - as well as political suicide for the proposers.
forget for a moment the liberal mantra of "why do you need a gun in the first place?" it's specious and unhelpful; you can't uninvent them. much like prostitution or drugs, it's a question of how you deal with the problem.
a ban takes weapons away from the responsible majority but the black market will always mean the criminal or the mad spree killer can access arms when needed - just look at the abject failure of legislation here post-hungerford & post-dunblane. one is left with an equally undesirable situation where the only people armed are criminals and the insane. the law there - and the law here - isn't working as intended.
the problem is far too intractable to be solved by knee-jerk legislation. i haven't got any answers beyond maybe the following combinations ...
- absolute minimum age limits for legal ownership with hermetically tight screening that includes a ban on all cash sales
- limit the number of firearms that any one individual can own
- a permament, rolling programme of nationwide gun amnesties for illegal weapons, maybe even cash-incentivised
- no civilian sell-through of automatic or semi-automatic military/police weaponry. the bolt action rifle, the revolver or the shotgun should be adequate for all needs: do you really need an AK to hunt or a glock or a SPAS-12 for home defence?
- controlled and rationed access to ammunition; screening for every ammunition re-application
- all legal ammunition to carry a significant bullet tax levy
- active law enforcement that allows for random spot-searches
- zero tolerance life sentencing without appeal for carriage, use or supply of an illegal firearm, illegal supply/possesion of ammunition or the deliberate, fatal/injurious use of any gun for anything other than self-defence on your own property
you can still bear arms but the contract between the state and the individual is much clearer and provides for severe punishment when transgressed. i'd say it's a case of winning over the manufacturers, the NRA, shrinking the black market and modifying behaviour over decades to develop a new level of control and civic responsibility that radically reduces gun-related injuries and deaths.
it's not mission:impossible but it is mission:bloody hard and mission:bloody expensive. one that requires serious political *****, friends in high places and a very persuasive manner.
the fundamental question is, what value do we place on human life? i suspect not enough. as a result, it sadly looks like we'll all just have to suffer tragic consequences like this from time to time.

It's not so much the fact that they want/need guns, it's a fundamental symbol of freedom that they can buy guns, it's pretty much on a par with freedom of speech.

An AK helps if you're a pi** poor shot I guess!
Hardly sport though; Buggs Bunny doesn't stand much of a chance!!
I would argue that in the US, something like a SPAS 12 is necessary for home defence - their homes are a lot bigger than ours and the wide dispertion of that shotgun means they can just let off one round from the bedroom and pepper the whole house with lead. Job's a good un, without even needing to get out of bed!!
Untill you realise that the "intruder" was, in point of fact, the maid!
Seriously though, I completely agree with your post! But then I would, as I said much the same thing on the first page!!!![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

you are absolutely right, no ifs, buts or maybes. the gun is embedded culturally and cultural shifts are the toughest of all.

If someone is really as intent on killing someone (as this guy oviously was) i'm sure i'd have done it with a knife if he couldn't get a gun.
Need to get rid of the weirdos rather than the guns

Doesnt every household in Switzerland own a gun? Therefore owning a gun is not the problem. Its the twisted nation who has it in their possesion IMO

As someone pointed out early, Canada has a comparable gun to person ratio to the USA, but a fraction of the gun crime!
Anyone know of any Canadian rappers??

Being reported in the media that although the guy had a restraining order against him, was admitted for mental illness, and was offered counselling by the university.
Yet he was still able to legitimatly buy a firearm because he ticked the "No" box next to "have you got a history of mental illness".
That surely cannot be defended by anyone? It is utter madness.
I don't support a blanket ban - but everyone should have police background checks, medical checks, training and regular check ups by the police.
As for the, bluntly, stupid comparasions between a firearm and a knife - I doubt that even after training in how to use a knife in combat, that an individual could kill those sorts of numbers without being overpowered.

How many of you who are passing judgement on here have actually lived in the US and are hence truly qualified to comment?
The crap about 'it's all out of control over there' - what a stupidly ill informed statement. Have any of you actually taken a good look at the UK recently, we're not exactly a bastion of law and order oursleves even with our wonderful gun laws.
Yes the US prides itself in a constitutional right to bear arms, whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is open to debate, but a spree killing like this does not mean the whole nation are a bunch of gun toting trigger happy morons and is no reason to have some sort of knee jerk reaction over gun ownership.
We did the same after Dunblane and look where that got us.

If you take away hope from a person, nothing except their own suffering seems to matter to them anymore!

I lived in the States for 3 years whilst I was at college...
One friend had an AK-47 (actually I think it was technically a Chinese variant).
My best friend had a Glock 33.
One friend was sent to jail for a Negligent Discharge and shot his friend in the side.
Another guy I know has a concealed hand gun license and carries around 2 semi automatics.
My first job over there I was a cleaner and one of the maintenance guys carried around a little Ruger with hollowpoint ammunition.
When I was over there last, I went to the local hillbilly shooting range- we took a USP, a couple of Glocks, a Beretta and a Second World War Russian Rifle - I have completely forgotten what it s called though! The week before there had been guys there with automatic M4 and Colt Commandos shooting t empty gas tanks etc.
Yes guns are rife over there, their Constitution allows it - gun ownership is a way of life for a large percentage of people over there - and most of those people are quite sane and sensible.
As with most things, it is the few that ruin if for many.
Criminals are going to get their hands on weapons one way or the other if they want them.
I just think that the vetting systems is way too lax - not that I know from personal experience of buying guns - but it seems that the checks are obviously not doing enough.
Guns should have to be sold back to the State as part of the Law... not pawned off/sold second hand.
