I would add that when we are all walking here, there and everywhere and taking all this additional exercise, what are we exhaling? That's right, more CO2.
Nobody takes into account all the CO2 saved by driving and not doing exercise. I don't do a lot of exercise so with my additional planting perhaps I am CO2 negative!

Hello
Of course there is a whole lot more to our argument. Every year tens of thousands of birds, rabbits, hedgehogs, red and grey squirells, badgers, weasels, cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses...the list can go on for hours, die mercilessly at the hands of speeding motorists around the UK. Also many rare foreign insects on our shores face death when faced with a car windscreen. I am afraid we are onto a loser unless we change our ways. We are killing our beautiful planet and all which comes with it. Very sad.
Regards,
Elwyn

Cars using a higher octain fuel put out less emmissions than a 1.1 fiesta using unleaded, arent you enjoying the warmer weather? I know I am, and you have us petrol guzzellers to thank for that, now go grab a beer and have a BBQ in your garden and enjoy the sunshine and warm weather

I would like to post something constructive, but can't think of a suitable reply, other than that this is not the place to be asking people to use their cars less.
Respectfully please go elsewhere.

....and surely, the faster we drive, the less time we spend on the road which means less emissions and less traffic which means we can drive faster. ![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
This is getting stupid! I would appreciate some answers to my queries in my response in Post 20 though.

**** this - im off to sell my scooby and buy a Prius, a far superior machine.
Seriously though, how can you take a message like that seriously when China in its eagerness to come up to par with the rest of the world powers its entire country using the dirtiest fuel possible? and America - someone remind me the % of emissions they create compared to the world total?
And we (as a species) will never be able to save the planet anyway, could you imagine the whole world agreeing to do anything together - they prefer to blow the c**p out of each other so we're all doomed as it is anyway; might as well enjoy life while we are still here.........***reaches for car keys***

Public transport ?
There is none after 6pm round here. I live in suburbia, not out in the country. To get to work by public transport would require 1 x 15 minute walk to the trainstation, 1 x 30 minute train ride followed by 1 x 45 minute walk to work. When the goverment can reduce my travelling time to 30 minutes by using public transport I will gladly reconsider my options.
Anyway, the faster I drive, the less pollution I produce in any one given spot on earth !!!!!

Modern trains my dearest friend run on electricity. They are also streamlined so the insects are thrown into the air vector over the whole train back into the atmosphere (according to one of my methodist worshippers). Small animals seldom walk into the path of a speeding train. Some of the negative responses are not very encouraging. This is the third motoring forum I have visited this week and had a similar response. I was not expecting this I must admit. I thought every human being had a conscience.

Except the big ba$tards which are diesel.
...and where does electricity come from?
I would also add that electrical cars are very uneconomic with respect to use of electricity because charging batteries is a very inefficient use of electricity.

if you are going to post on here at least get your facts right, where i live there is no overheads or live rails.virgin trains, first great western and many others have new trains how do you think they run, on solar power?no you tw@t they have gas guzzling diesel engines under them.

Alright, I take your point we have long way to go before the whole of the UK rail network is fully electrified. However as far as insect and other sacred creatures are concerned there are the same deaths for 90 people on a train as what there would be for 4 passengers in a car: each mode of transport has one windscreen and catches the same number of insects. End of argument really. Your conscience of the death of these creatures is shared with 90 people not 4 or at worst 1 lone passenger in a car.

Elwyn Whittock,
I think i speak for the majority when i say thanks for visiting our forum, having someone who has our interests in their mind when talking environment can only be a step forward.
I like many others though have an issue with the 'CO2 = Global Warming' concept widely publicised by the 'Power Figures' of the world, and my reasons mainly lie within the fact that their is just as much proof that Global Warming is being caused by CO2 as their is to say its being caused by another factor outside our control.. for example the theory that the Sun is heating up/getting bigger and could also be causing it. I believe i read the other day that Venus and Mars are heating at the same rate as the Earth, yet contain no means of producing anything other than 'Natural' CO2. Perhaps the reason the alternative theories arent widely accepted or researched into far enough to be able to present a case to discount them completely out of debate by our 'Power Figures' is that they are not taxable? I dont know.. you tell me... perhaps i just have a trust issue with the kettle and black ***'d saucepan that run our country.
If CO2 was proved without doubt to be the reason our Earth is warming, then i would gladly give up my 2006 Impreza STi. Currently it isnt so im going to just pay my higher tax in the hope that the money will be put to use with additional independant research which is soo badly needed on the Earth Warming subject.
I also think alot more could be done to assist the motorist away from our road, strange how a small company like this: Tesla Motors can produce an electric car that would appeal to many Sport Car enthusiasts like the users of this forum when many major manufacturers are still investing in 'Oil Burning' methods of transport. Something tells me that the fact the Electric Car couldnt be 'Green Taxd' or give a route to produce the massive revenue now being drained from the Motorist has some role to play.
If im wrong, please assist me with Importing a Tesla... because i think we may have the first 'Tax Exempt' car for the new banding they have produced. Im sure this will be far from forthcoming though.
Your thoughts appriciated.

hang on a second!
1. hybrids
total cost to the environment over it's full lifetime (including material extraction, manufacture, and disposal) is more than a lot of petrol cars. they're really not much better, if any, at all! ...
2. dead animals
yes well not great but largely unavoidable. it's not large numbers of rare species that get killed, it's very small numbers of very common ones. so not affecting mother earth at all then. or maybe roads could have "rabbit barriers" at the sides?
as for rare foreign insects - shouldn't they be somewhere else!? and if they are here, then they're threatening our national ecosystem as they're not indigenous (remember red & grey squirrels?).
3. a decent alternative
just doesn't exist yet! public transport is rubbish. unless you live in somewhere london and work in the centre. i live in london and work on the outskirts - car is 25 minute journey, bus is 1hr 15mins, train is 1hr 45 mins!!! or electric cars... i too have seen the tesla (nice point marmski), why could our taxes not go to developing alternatives such as that, that can be powered by national networks of solar and wind power stations?
4. does global warming really exist?
i'm not sure anymore, i thought it did for a while but now i think that maybe the global economy that has sprung up from it's existence is just to create jobs and revive economies. that plus the evidence i have seen that shows that changes in CO2 levels are following trends in temperature, not preceding them... so where's the cause and where's the effect? like marmski said, show us the proof and we will be a lot happier to change.
rant over... enjoy those scoobies guys![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

1/ Downsize to a smaller car with lower emissions. This will also save you money both in terms of fuel consumption and vehicle excise duty. Some small cars are even free of any duty since the last budget! There’s an incentive for you all.
Done that, got rid of my 2.5l V6 cavalier and downsized to a 2l 4 cylinder impreza WRX
2/ Consider a dual fuel vehicle or hybrid. Many are on sale already and the list keeps growing. I have driven one and they are fantastic to drive!
Got one - Shell V-power or Tesco 99
3/ If you use your car for domestic and pleasure purposes only limit your use of the vehicle to just 10 miles per week. For every mile above this distance you increase your CO2 emissions by 53%.
I only use the car for pleasure so
to that
4/ Consider converting your car to run on biofuel, propane or hydrogen.
But what would I drink, snort and smoke then
5/ Buy a car with a diesel engine. Whilst these produce similar amounts of CO2 to a petrol engine they are more fuel efficient so therefore are cleaner.
Yep, when they run 250bhp and big torque figures from the factory
6/ Consider another hobby other than motoring which will take up your time and provide similar thrills for the adrenaline junkies amongst you such as bungee jumping or white water rafting. Or why not take the kids to the local fun fair and share a ride!
My other hobby is spraying thinner based paints in non-environmentally controlled garage.
7/ Take the train to work or cycle there, it’s good for your health and your wealth.
Actually I walk, but only because the nearest parking space to my office is my drive
