You're really making quite a meal of this. Most civilised people ARE able to go for a drink without covering themselves in the various items you've listed, and will thoroughly enjoy the experience of doing it in a smoke-free environment. Apart from the chavvy yoof drinkholes, there really won't be any need for enforcement, just watch and see.

Agreed. It wasn't so long ago that you were allowed to smoke in our local shopping center, they brought in a ban and now people have to nip outside. It doesn't seem to be a problem, the smokers have just accepted it. In my first place of work the smokers shared the same staff room as non-smokers, there were a few grumbles when smoking on the premises was banned but pretty soon it was the norm. I can't ever remember someone dialling 999 because someone was having a crafty puff (no jokes ) in either place.

Thumbs up

All this fuss about how it's not going to work, how do you police it etc.....

People DO just accept it as they (including the smokers) all know it's for the best. Feels strange for the first week or two then it's treated as normal.

Get on with it

PS If Scotland accepts going outside for a smoke with our climate, then it should be a doddle for the Southerners

I am chuffed to **** as Germany the world biggest smoking country where *** machines are on every street corner are also banning smoking in indoor public places. They however didn't mince around and pass a law then gave you 2 years to wait for it to come in to force, they passed the law and then started implementing it, so hopefully I won't have to put up with stinky inconsiderate smokers here either for much longer.

Fantastic! best thing the governmnt ever did!!!

At least if I go home smelling of beer and sick, it's likely to be my OWN beer and sick, not someone else's - unlike cigarette smoke.

Roll on the ban... possibly the ONLY good thing this government has done.

I can see there being a few town/city centre pubs facing a bit of a challenge when Mr. Meathead and his 6ft7 friends light up.

Landlord: "Put it out son"
****: "No"
Landlord: "Oh, erm..........****"

Fair enough I am in a teeny weeny minority here and I accept all your points as valid. Many of them would be far more valid if the supporting fact wasnt smell but was health...
Going through all these threads on the topic over the last few months almost everyone refers to smelly clothes but hardly any refer to health benefits...

So if tobacco manufacturers invent an odourless ciggy the ban can be lifted (i'm joking, dont eat me)...

Why isn't "I don't like going home after a drink in the pub stinking of other peoples' cigarette smoke" not a valid objection?

Let's turn the argument around - why should smoking be allowed? It's just for the pleasure of those who choose to smoke, nothing more. Why does the displeasure of those who choose not to smoke not seem a valid counter-argument to you?

If smoking actually had a proven health benefit, then I'd understand why you'd regard 'I don't like the smell' as a poor reason to complain - but it doesn't.
