Spec C vs 911 turbo ...
#61
Add a bend or 2 in any test with 2 drivers and you loose the back to back as their nerve/familiarity comes immediatly to play.
Better back to back is an EVO v Impreza.
911 v Audi R8
That is a better classification?
Bit boring maybe.
How about a Caterham v an Impreza?
Those 2 are as dissimilar as a Spec C and a GT3
Going round in circles?
What value is this?
Someome wants a 911 so he buys one.
Similarly, someone drives off in the Spec C for same/different reasons
Interesting maybe, but important?
Graham.

Graham,
"Add a bend or 2 in any test with 2 drivers and you loose the back to back as their nerve/familiarity comes immediatly to play."
No test is perfect. However if you take a few moderatly talented drivers
and they consistently test/drive cars fairly hard one following the other
and vice versa, you develop a decent understanding of how a car(s)
handles. And indeed if a driver is not driving well its up to the more
competent one to show him/her how its done. I really don't think I'm
going out on a limb here in saying that a 996TT will inherently handle
differently on certain roads than say a Spec C impreza. JL

Maybe this is a question - if talking Generally about the purchasers and drivers of each said car.
Impreza Spec C
911 Turbo
Which is likely to be the better driver?
My instinct tells me that *generally* the person who buys a vanilla 911 turbo is the same person who would walk into a dealership and buy an Impreza WRX - although obviously with more disposable income!
The person who goes and buys an Impreza Spec C, I would expect to walk past all those "normal" 911's and head straight to the RS parked in the corner.

ill test them both when my scoob comes back from getting fixed.
its at scooby clinic at moment
my type r ver 6 few mods .. about 340-350bhp am hoping / guessing now but deffo 320+ ish
vrs
my 911 turbo (996)
will test them out on a small airfield where i usualy take them for a blast i only live at most 1/2 a mile away from it.
will make a decent video and do 4-5 runs.
driven both.... in the 911 ive had speeds up to 185mph no probs and still pulling the scooby is very tight and quick of the mark but anything over 60mph i would say the 911 will pull away also much better stopping / grip from the 911.
your more than welcome to bring your own car along and put it vs the 911.
time 1-2 weeks depending how quick my cars fixed!

If you can afford a 911 Turbo you can afford another car to transport kids.
Try not to convince yourselfs that there are people out there who bought a 25k Impreza rather that a £100k 911 turbo as there kids would not fit in the back.
LOL at Image of Porsche......only an Impreza driver would come out with such utter tosh.

Sorry mate that aint me - i could never drive that quick - that is Smacs very own 'Supertouring' and as far as i know he was on road tyres, check out the lap times and that gives you an idea on how both were trying.
just goes to show that in the right hands even a lightly modded STI can be a superb track weapon.

I guess I'm another one who needs their head testing. Although I can't really afford a decent 911, as I'd have to give up something else, I would feel uncomfortable owning one. I like their looks and I like the way they perform, but I don't like the statement they make regarding wealth. TBH, I would rather a Litchfield Type 25.

Satan,
"will test them out on a small airfield where i usualy take them for a blast i only live at most 1/2 a mile away from it."
Really I think better would be get another good driver to drive
with you and take to good b roads. My bet is that if your Spec
C is set up right with great brakes and power, it will be damn
close round those curves. Please let me know (let us all know!)
if you ever get around to doing that!! Thanks, JL

I love 911's. always have and would have one tomorrow if I could afford one, unfortunately I can't.
I bought my Impreza (spec D STI) because of the performance and am too old for the "big spoiler, gold wheels" image.
I said to a mate the other week that I'd bought a "poor man's performance car" he replied (and I love this) "no, you've bought a prudent man's performance car" q.e.d.

I want to get one for my daily driver and use the Scoob as a trackday toy when funds permit.
Having said all this Mate owns Fearnsport apends all his time working on Gt3 Gt2 and racing 911's now some of them are in a different world 996 Gt2 running 820Hp is prettty Fooking scary!
I think it's fair to say most Porsches are going to be more reliable, better build quality etc etc, my old 944T was 12 years old had done 120k miles on origonal engine and running gear and was perfect in every sense, new owner now done 160k still without any engine or drivetrain work and tuned to 350hp
My P1 box is letting go with only 300hp going through it for 10k miles!

There was a guy in a new version 4S (Best 4wd non turbo they do) when I did a Don Palmer day at Bruntingthorpe earlier this year.
My car has nearly 400bhp and Type25 suspension.
I have to say, the cars were very evenly matched around the handling course. When he went as a passenger* in mine, he mentioned the better grip and pickup.
When I was a passenger in his, I was taken away by how much better the brakes were.
But then £17K vs £70K, you would expect a bigger gap.
* The other rear passenger at the time got seasick in the back of my car. Too many fast sudden and severe changes of direction
