hello,
I had a classic and now have a bugeye.
my major problem is "who will do the maintenance ( or mods )", the subaru dealer doesn't help much and near me there aren't any "subaru specialists".
the budget isn't high but I just love these cars

Heh if you lot think driving a subaru is expensive you should have seen my 220hp peugeot 309
All of the unreliability and a shocking fuel consumption, the scoob drinks £10pw less and is by far the most reliable car ive owned
I reckon half the problem is people not treating them with respect ie ragging from cold etc
Granted ive already done the flywheel and clutchh but it seemed suspect...the clutch was actually fine but the flywheel spigot bearing was a joke so can't have been done with the last clutch

When I bought the car I knew it was going to be expensive, if not maintenence and repair, then modification. Yes it can be a little frustrating at times, but it's a lot less frustrating than golf and a lot more exhilarating. If it got me down it would sit on my drive 13 days out of 14 doing nothing other than getting covered in cr@p from the adjacent building site. Day 14 it gets driven like it should, I have fun and then clean it. In the mean time I get on with building the looms for my STi lights, painting my grill and STi scoop and generally enjoy the car as an all round hobby and not just a tool for getting me from A to B, that's where the wife's scenic comes in. And that despite having less than a 1000 miles on the clock has been less reliable than the scoob.

WHY OH WHY
Do people feel the need to slagsomeone off just cause they said owning one of these cars isnt quite what they expexcted
I luv my car and I knew about the tyres and insurance and running costs but and it a BIG but I didnt expect the engine to let go at 48000 miles or the clutch to need replacing at the same time
So for all you 'oh I knew it was expensive but dont care' people out there get a life Christ god help someone has a slightly negative outlook on these cars an posts it here flamesuit ALWAYS required

Are you for real you aremaking these cars sound like they are some expensive porsche. A lot of these cars are now available for a couple of grand, so dont think your special because you own one. I love mine but it cost me less than i paid for my mini.

I can understand exactly how Monkian feels. I loved my early STI Classic, one of the first 200 and I tweaked the engine and exhaust system etc. to give me outstanding performance. I admired the basic build quality, especially from the engineering point of view. The roadholding was outstanding when the bumpsteer was eradicated and the rear roll bar links changed for the solid ones. No understeer but totally balanced in the bends. I deliberately kept the car's appearance totally original too.
I could afford to run it alright but since I did not own it from new I had no idea how it had been driven before and was always worried whether it had been thrashed and been suffering detonation on No 3 cylinder. With the narrow big end bearings I eventually felt I could no longer go along with the risk of a very expensive rebuild if No 3 did let go so I exchanged it for an M3 Evo which at least has a pretty bomb proof engine as long as the variable valve gear is ok.
I still miss the car but is was a relief to lose the worry about the engine.

Am I the only one that thinks running aint really that bad. I'm pretty skint, but I dont think they are that expensive. Ok they do drink fuel when pushed hard, but you dont need to drive everywere on boost. I have managed to get nearly 300 miles to a tank of fuel so far, and then sometimes I can only get 150 miles, swings and roundabouts.
Insuarance for me is around £400 fully comp (alram and tracker fitted) which is only £50 more that my oil burning zafira. Subaru parts aint any more than any other marks and same goes for the servicing. Just had all the gaskets changed on the OS head by Bulldog Subaru for £90 all (that did include a 10% discount)
So all in all I dont think they are that bad. When I had Vauxhell oil burning zaf it cost £500 for a basic service and oil cooler change,£500 for the injector seals to be changed and like another £500 for new discs and pads.
I love my scooby and life is to short not to have fun, after all its only money.

What they don't consider is that when they first take the car in for a service, it will cost them a few hundred quid, then you have all the other consumables: tyres, brake pads and discs and fuel etc... none of which are cheap. That's to say nothing of the TLC a 10 year old peformance car might need.
Since I've had my car (about 2 and and half years), I've most likely paid out more than the equivalent cost of an early UK Turbo in servicing and consumables, and it's not an 'everyday' car!!
That's before you count any mods!!!

the only down fall is the fuel, but i expected that anyway, my insurance is just over £500, i have a few mates who are mechanics so servicing etc doesnt come that dear for me, but thats what these cars are all about, so if you like to keep your wallet in your pocket dont buy one.
