Hello

Tell me about it. I recently finished an eight year spell of doing exactly that with a worldwide customer base. I don't know the actual figures involved as they were kept confidential with each client, but it was a sh*t load more than I was earning that's for sure.

What people don't realise is that with many of these jobs it's not quite the same as being a mechanic working on a £30,000 car or a builder working on a £300,000 house.

Most enterprise level projects are worth at least millions of pounds and can affect hundreds of thousands of people.

If you are putting in £6 million pounds worth of EMC equipment for a project it is nothing to pay a storage expert from them to configure it in 30 mandays for £75,000, or even pay an internal contractor £150K a year to design and manage it.

And that's not to mention if it goes down when in production and you are facing liquidated damages of £1 million a day.

We used to have a bunch of guys (exchange experts - I mean experts) on 30k salaries (cost to us - £230.00 per day including NIC/health/pension/car and expenses)being charged out at £1400.00 per day plus expenses. Average techie salary in NI was probably 12-14k at the time, so they thought that they were on big bucks. I remember one of the guys getting hold of an invoice. He demanded a 10k salary increase (bringing his daily cost up to £280) and was completely amazed when we agreed it. He wasn't so impressed when we sent him to mexico for a month and saved the 10k by booking him into a no star hotel

(he got over it -On my advice he transfered his knowledge to SANS. I did a mortgage for him last year - he now 'consults' for £350.00 an hour. Tends to stop around lunchtime most days )
