If society is ticking along nicely. Then No as is just interupts young peoples lives and hinders them getting on with it.

If society is losing its way. Then Yes. Young people wandering around being yobs and having their thumbs up their *****.

Given UK 2007 - Then the answer is Yes.

As for your second point.
This really is a whole can of worns

I agree with SJ as i would not want my kids involved due to the illegality (in my mind).
However, the armed forces loyalties are to King/Queen and Country, and this may lie in direct conflict with some peoples religious beliefs. I am not sure how this would work.

Good parenting (by rich and poor alike) plus decent strict schooling and respect for laws/rules and the people whio enforce them used to install disciple and a value system in kids who then grew up to become parents and pass this on. Class or where you live or how much you earn should not be the issues and a barrier or an excuse for poor parenting and antisocial behaviour.

Good from bad, right from wrong are basics as is respect for others.

I do not soley blame NL as the seeds where sown a long time back. Someone does need to sort out the mess and i am pretty sure Blair and Brown are just not up to it, they have singularly failed to do so in the last 10 years!
Spot on Paul.
Now will future politicians grab the bull by the horns and do something about the decline? I so hope so with all my heart as I love my country but dont hold out too much hope? lets wait and see what the next 10-15 years hold!

I live in both South Germany and the UK these days. And I hate saying it but the UK has become a ****hole over the past few years and the contrast between the two societies is staggering.

I watched the programme last night with Victoria Wood in India, Hong Kong and Borneo talking about the days of the empire and it set me thinking about the people that went out there and built the empire, putting the country first and their lives second.

How long ago was it when the country came first - with a significant majority of people willing to lay down their lives for the country? The attitude that previals nowadays is more one of "I wouldn't p*** on you if you were on fire, nuts to the country, I'm in it for myself."

A wider sign of the times or something that is just limited to our small island?

IMO

If the country went to war then, yeh (i'm talking WW2 stuff here - home soil, not afghan, iraq, war on terror etc) but, at the moment............

....no ta! There's enough oxygen thiefs in the forces already thanks and they volunteered . I don't want the the likes of scum, chavs, assylum seekers and imigrants who have won their british passport/identity under my command thanks.

Even my first statment should still imply some stipulation to prevent said scum joining up.

Sorry if this offends but, hey you asked.

Something along the lines of the German model....
What about - you get tax breaks for doing your 2 years plus being TA-able for periods following that, 2 years at a time?

"A willing volunteer is better than ten pressed men".

I would prefer to have people backing me and supporting me because they want to than some no-mark k**b end forced to do it.

Yep, after "Cough er hum" years in green I believe that in the current climate constription would be counter productive. Half would be out on their ear after the first CDT and the other half would be crippled because they would have to wear boots.

And before anyone goes off on one, all samples are tested.
