It's not our fault your currency almost isn't worth the paper it's written on

But I take your point about roaming charges - they are pricey. Apparently OFTEL are "sorting it".....

nevermind.... i was stating that me paying 255 is the same as you paying 520.

same value in both cases.

Whenever you are away from your home network (i.e. Vodafone UK) you'll be roaming, even if you stay within europe on the Vodafone branded networks you'll still be roaming, and being charged accordingly (pay to receive calls etc).

Not living in the UK I'm not sure if it's still the case but certainly Vodafone used to be by far the dearest network to roam with, Orange and One2One (who I think are T-mobile now?) were cheapest.

Not surprised by that, Ive had a £300+ bill while in the States, I bought a sprint phone a couple of years ago and divert my UK number to that when travelling.

I am amazed that the thread starter is amazed??!

It was the 'not thinking anything about it' that was your downfall. Next time you travel, speak to your provider before you leave and ask about International Traveller options which for nominal fees can reduce your bill dramatically. Ask about roaming costs so you know your approximate price per minute. Set call limits on your phone so you can monitor your spend etc...

I appreciate if you have never been abroad since the beginning of the mobile phone era this advice may be groundbreaking, but this kind of stuff is in bill inserts, adverts on the tele, on the providers website etc...

You will have to pay up... If you abuse a member of staff in the call centre and threaten to port then a supervisor may credit you £20 for goodwill, but you would have to be a poo face to be so scummy

Hope this helps and at least you know for next time

People often forget that they get charged to recieve calls whilst abroad, plus it's at an inflated rate. Most companies do a 'roaming' package which drops the cost of the calls considerably, it's normally only a couple of quid for the month too.

Only problem is, you might not be finished yet. I used to have to advice that calls from abroad can take months to appear on your bills.

I'm amazed how many people still get suprised from high bills after roaming.

I mean, it's not like roaming charges are kept secret is it!

Could be worse. You could be in Kent where the nearest mast is in France and get charged international rates even though you are in the UK

Surprising what you can be charged loads for without realising isn't it!!!

I feel a bit churlish complaining given the size of the bill you've run up inadvertantly, but just on the 'careful to read the small print theme',the other day I got a bill informing me that I was £90 under my allowed credit limit on a Flex T plan. However, my Bill said that I had made £9 of calls outside this limit!

Guess why?

Most companies allow you to pay a charge each month to reduce your roaming costs,
There has been a green paper on just these charges and its due for reform.

Vodafone are a bunch of thieving pikeys.

Few year ago, me and Lisa had contract phones with them. She had to go to Barcelona for a week for her Uni course. Quick call a day, but mainly chatting through text messages. Take the hit for making and obviously her receiving the calls.

Anyway when the bill came there was a number neither of us recognised. So off we went to the shop, whats this number etc etc... guy in the shop didn't know. Checked through both our phones for the number, no one we knew.

Checked through the settings.... turns out it was the number for Vodafone message centre. Thieving ***** charging to receive a text message.

I can understand charging to receive a call, but you can't choose whether you receive a text message or not.

Needless to say, they didn't get any money from us
