I'm not saying it is or isn't safer now than back then, my gut says it feels less safe now.
But, is this possibly because of the way things are reported now and the mass coverage we get from the media with 24hr news channels etc. reporting every event, where as 20 years ago we just didn't hear about it all as much and so appeared as though it was safer?
Just a thought.

I think it might be the fact the there are hardly any more people with moral values.

i used to roam the streets till all hours when i was a kid. never even entered my head to be scared of anything. i dont remember being told to take care when it got dark.
in Secondary school we had just one black kid who looked really out of place

Shame that most kids wont be able to do what we did when we were younger.

i spent my childhood outside from a pretty young age, something my daughter will miss out on. its safer to keep her in doors but not as good for her. kids need freedom but they cant have it anymore

i cant remember ever seeing anything on the news about abductions and stuff. obviously it happened but very infrequently. we didnt have mobile phones either so had no way of keeping in contact with parents. they just assumed we would be home safe and sound.

Even as teenager it was cool to hang out at night even in the worst of places, there might be a scuffle here and there, but that was it. Nowadays it is all knives and guns....
Thankfully the memory remains!

Knives are a real problem in british cities, mainly due to african and eastern european teens and young men carrying them about.
My younger brother who is a gym enthusiast like me was telling me the other day how these days he will no longer allow himself to end up in a confrontation even with people he would easily batter the crap out of due to fear of them carrying knives etc.
Its all labours fault really with their bull**** lax laws. These asbo kids know they can **** about all day long and it will take several convictions before they risk being sent off to jail, hence there not being a deterrent there from them to not be anti-social!

We have a bloke walking free in our town, despite having stabbed someone to death only 6 years ago. 5 years for manslaughter out in 4

Some of the comments on this thread are just ott. How leaving some kids in YOUR apartment and checking them every 15 mins is irresponsible is beyond me. They loved their kids and obviously were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I could count the number of times i've seen small kids on their own thru housing estates etc. Obviously its the parents fault for letting them play and not the paedo for going into that area.
Its one of those unfortunate events and shame on all the people who have branded these parents. They have enough to cope with without the righteous brigade coming down on them.
I am amazed no one has condemned the sick fc*k who has taken the 3 year old yet![Cuckoo](images/smilies/cuckoo.gif)

And what on earth has seeing kids by themsleves on a council estate got to do with with leaving 3 babies locked in a room when your not there... What exactly...
![Ponder2](images/smilies/ponder2.gif)
do you have 3 year old...! ever had one...?
ALL of mine have woken up in the night screaming and scared, i certainly would'nt like to think they were in that state for 15mins in a dark room...
Other than talking total bollox, i wouldn't like to think you ever had the respocibilty of looking after babies, and with dumb comments like that thinking that its acceptable is just plain stupid.
As for the parents they made a totally irrespocible and almost reckless mistake with there childrens lives... simple as!
![Nono](images/smilies/nono.gif)
Now I couldn't even begin to understand the anguish these two are feeling and if it happend to my kids i think i'd have to be sedated until it was sorted i'd be that distraut, let alone the wife. How they are coping i'll never know but i hope and prey that she's returned safely and that it ends well. I really really feel for them I couldn't imagine what they are going through.

its a sad sad situation, and truly hope she's returned ok.

Calm down and stop frothing at the mouth Dazza. LOL overreaction to my comment as usual or what. You don't know anything about me so commenting on my parenting skills for what i said is perhaps even more stupid. Don't tell me your a psychic
I was merely pointing out that gangs could quite easily ****** kids playing on their own in housing estates etc. Maybe thats more irresponsible than a locked room when the kids r asleep and being checked on???
Make up your mind. First thing your saying these people are irresponsible and implying they shouldn't have kids like myself and next your giving them a group hug
great stuff dazza keep it up

I dont - analysis/learning is good.. I left my kid once 'safe' fast asleep in a hotel whilst we were a few yards away as mentioned [nothing happened!!!!]. I still need to learn from this though and I am still not convinced that what we did was an irresponsible thing to do. Following thread with interest...

I can only imagine the fear that the child's parents are going through.

Was going to add this, then read the last page of comments and thought better of it, but bollox, here goes:
I am a parent and would never leave my child in a room where I wasn't locked inside the same property with (ie my house) or wasnt in eye sight of. Mines 4. Leaving these kids over 50m away and round the corner is appalling.
However I can't begin to imagine what the parents are going through and how much more guilty they are being made to feel by the likes of the media and US!
Its a terrible thing to have happened and the portuguese law doesn;t seem to be helping either with regard to withholding info!
However, I really pray they find her safe and well very soon. Can't imagine the grief Madeleine must be going through let alone the parents. The ****** that took her should be castrated at the ***** and be allowed to bleed to death.

Some people have suggested that the parents are paying the price for their "mistake" but they're not, they're only going to have to live with the consequences of their actions.
The person who's really paying for their "mistake" is a very frightened 3 year old little girl - personally my thoughts are with her more than with her parents right now.

As for the little girl then who knows. I hope for the best and fear the worse.
