I expect that the risk of being killed in a car accident on the way to the airport is greater, but still people are afraid of flying.

People will now take immense precautions against abduction, while subjecting their kids to potentially more hazardous passive smoking so as to not let them out of their sight. It's a complex topic that common sense doesn't necessarily address adequately.
