I thought now would be a good time to strengthen the union not disband it, With Countries like China and India emerging with a Billion + people and economies growing at a breathtaking rate. How do you think Scotland with a population of 5 million will fare in the world economy.

These are worring times for Scotland. The charismatic Salmond now has a better than ever opportunity to cajole his fellow Scots into something most don't want - independence.
Seems that the increase in the SNP vote was largely down to the Salmond factor and as a protest against a UK govt that has been in power for 10 years. In other words, the majority of Scots don't seem any more fussed for separatism than they ever were.
I don't think there's any doubt that Scotland could be independent, but at the expense of being poorer !!
Long live Scotland, long live England - together !
(not forgetting the taffs and NI ).

I'm not overly keen on this self-righteousness, for lack of better words, that some English seem to be donning. I don't think Salmond would push for independance if it wasn't financially viable. Now, clearly it's not going to be happening any time soon, but if we take the necessary steps I believe it IS possible. Eventually.

So what changes when we lead our own affairs, all it needs is ratified and who will object. England could be in trouble though you ain't popular on the continent.
But on your conclusion seriously England and Wales would they belong if Scotland cannot. Same principle if you are right. It would change for all, either we all exist in the EEC or our agreement is null and void as it was applied for as United Kingdom which no longer existed.

I do not feel that this China will be needing our exports they will be needing their cheap goods to enter the EEC. A more important time to be part of the EEC than out of it, that is where the protection is, Westminster believe in full free trade or ownership. I would hope through land purchase reform and national identity and protection we would take a lead from France, Switzerland and Germany and protect through EEC, Scotland and its industry.
India I don't know much about but the cheap labour market. As for technical expertise or natural resources that's open to question.
As for 5/6 Million population, how does Norway fair or Iceland or Denmark or Eire. I believe through more intelligent use of natural resources and investment in future industry that fits our population needs and has long term viability is more important being local led & planned.
You do not look far to see your own Southern/Northern divide in England. Two separate needs/economies all being directed by the South and who gets the worse of the deal.
Our productive Scottish companies are seeing the European and the world as our main export target and have done so successfully for years in Finance/Meat/Fishing/Insurance/Whisky/Beer/Engineering and a resource often overlooked the Scots people themselves through expertise and working all over the world leading future markets and local growth. Its a pity the Westminster see our most productive companies as a cash cow without proper support and assistance.
I would hope through dedicated investment and assistance from EEC and looking after what is important to our country resources we would be the better for it. Its a challenge but why would a country like Scotland if it was true want to be known as a scrounger or poor partner that needs supported by its neighbour. I don't feel Scots are like than in person so why should our country be different. We can fight well above our weight in respect of expertise and world achievements, but we cannot look after our country, its lame and has more to do with being scared of change.
I would rather be poorer with dignity and a country providing what I feel is right like free education/University, free Medical and looking after the less fortunate till they get on their feet or over their circumstances. Not long term assistance but structured till they can stand on there own. Be a constructive part of the EEC through our abilities and endeavours and most important the people themselves, we are world renown for aiding other countries set-up democracy, industry and I do not feel it much to ask that we control our own destiny or attempt it. The only fear is starting!
A country nationhood is marked by how it looks after the less well off, the sick and the elderly. I feel we are very well placed in this regard and do not feel the Scots would feel hard done by if they saw the benefits work and have purpose. It may mean we pay higher tax but a better economy or country to live in is well worth the expense.

Bram - its a done deal. We all agree with you. You'll find the SNP have an increasing amount of vocal support in England who also want you to F off out of our lives and politics.
