marine tank is NOTHING like tropical.
you need to get the water EXACT in number of ways, calcium, PH, magnesium, KH, the list goes on. You cant have fluctuations in temp and levels like a freshwater fish can. In a river the water temp and conditions can alter hugely - the sea is always the same though....you need consitancy.
I have £2k of tank computer running my tank with email and text alert to any problems, UPS and generator backups.
to run my first tank which was only a 4ft tank:
i built an entire out house to hold the sump gear:
Ypu WILL NOT get a decent reef tank running for under a few grand and MANY hours of research - you may get a fish only set up on a budget but thats not my cup of tea.
Go on ebay and look for used marine tanks....all those people that thought "its just like freshwater" !!!
reading some other posts on here....if you want to run a fish only tank with tap water then you can do that on a budget - but IMO a good trop tank will look far better. If you are going to go marine then you may as well benifit from keeping inverts and corals.
