Thanks for that Kieran. I have to admit that I did not know that the engines were a combination turbo and ramjet. That is very interesting. No wonder there was such a violent yaw when the spike got it all wrong, it would have been a virtually complete engine shut down.

great story - and the SR71 was developed what, in the 70's? (or even late 60's)

Imagine whats available now thats yet to break cover

In some ways there may not be that much available now, the cold war is over now. The defence spending in that era was immense. We also have to factor in the fact that we now have satellites to do a lot of the work, the need for speed is purely in our brains, and not high on the list of requirements drawn up by the bean counters

yes, maybe for manned spy planes, such as the SR71, but I bet theres plenty of development work ongoing (i.e. unmanned drones and fighterplanes)

Lockheed Martin's Skunkworks is still operational isnt it?

A pleasure mate - the first time I read about ramjets, I was totally bemused at how just going really fast allowed you to go... really fast!
