To be a complete pedant - I just wanted to add that the spikes were what allowed the SR-71 to get the thrust to go so damn fast.

In some ways there may not be that much available now, the cold war is over now. The defence spending in that era was immense. We also have to factor in the fact that we now have satellites to do a lot of the work, the need for speed is purely in our brains, and not high on the list of requirements drawn up by the bean counters

There's always talk of ultra secret/Black projects projects that succeeded the SR71 that are still Top Secret and obviously not publicised by the USAF/CIA/whoever. Massvie amounts of money going into seemingly black holes in the budget that no-one seems accountbale for etc. The name most used is Aurora as this appeared in a budget request to congress below the U2 and SR71 programs in the 80's.
Just Google "Aurora Secret" and it's all there, believe what you will!

....and yep, it's most likely produced by the Skunk works.

Thanks for that Kieran. I have to admit that I did not know that the engines were a combination turbo and ramjet. That is very interesting. No wonder there was such a violent yaw when the spike got it all wrong, it would have been a virtually complete engine shut down.
