Very stupid move by them! Funny comments from most of you nevertheless...
I agree with you (having just eaten a twix).

I eat Masterfoods chocolate every day. From October I will have to eat supermarkets own label copies.

Signed, a pale skinny hippy

p.s. write to them here: MASTERFOODS

Your lives are so governed by the need to avoid meat products that you'd go to the trouble of sourcing alternative chocolate?

It's all bollocks at the end of the day as if you were on a desert island and there was only meat to eat and you were starving, you would. Just can't understand "lifestyle vegitarianism"

nothing to do with it.

The product is fine as it is. It ain't broke so why fix it? Simple profiteering. These products have been around for donkey's years. I doubt there will be a big label on it "now with added cow guts" they just hope people won't notice.

its scummy and deserves to be called out as such.

Do you actually know the reason they've decided to do it, before labelling it "scummy"?

"Masterfoods said the change was due to it switching the sourcing of its ingredients"

i.e. cheaper. chemically recovered calves gut lining. yummy.

of course it is. all my idea... you don't seem that daft...

oh and for reference, they only coughed up because they got found out...

"Trade magazine The Grocer said yesterday it had seen a letter to a consumer from Masterfoods which explained that, due to a change in the ingredients used in their chocolate recipes from 1 May, 2007, many of the products now contain whey.

The company explained that this was a by-product of the cheese-making process and uses rennet from an animal source."

So essentially someone with an allergy wrote to complain that they could have killed them by sneaking this stuff in and they were forced to admit they'd put rennet in there too.

I say again, scummy.

You are assuming, from what i can see, that it's been done on the basis of cost. Can you substantiate that?

Can you substantiate that it isn't?

Logically, free market capitalism, company aims to make as much profit at as lower margin as possible.

The product has been the same for years. suddenly a change in supplier of ingredients. Now, knowing that the product was fine (no government orders etc against it) why would a company move to a new spllier and is a competitive bidding process took place who do they go for? The cheapest.

There are two reasons why they would have changed, cheaper or because they had to. Now since they didn't have to and since the move wasn't done with public health in mind as the evidence presented shows that leaves us with cheaper.

It is the logical answer. If you can show different, feel free to have a go or stop trolling.

I'm not trolling, but i do like to be clear when we're basing arguments upon assumptions. It happens a lot on here, you see.

Without getting into a debate of pro or against vegetarians/vegans (I went throught such debates already a long time ago).

I really don't care if Mars did change its products due to cost savings or any other reason. Their products just turned against my Ideology and I won't be buying them in the future anymore. At the age of 16 I have decided to become vegetarian and 17 years later I am still living my life this way without any regrets (au contraire). If they think that they took the right step, let them believe it. It's their choice and sales numbers will sooner or later give them the correct answer.

Nobody tells me what I should eat and I don't tell anybody what they should eat. But, it is really strange how protective people (who eat meat) get as soon as vegetarianism comes up in a conversation. Lots of them tell me that they only rarely eat meat or that they only eat fish, etc.. I really hate such 'justifications/excuses' and they are just not necessary. I would rather hear a person telling me that he/she is a proud/passionate meat eater instead of their usual explanations. Anyway.. each to their own.

I eat meat at least twice a day, 3 times on a weekend, Meat rocks. Not eating meat is for teenage girls who cry over pictures of puppies wearing lipstick.
