Yes it is def ilegal to undertake..
My hubby is a HGV driver and sometimes he has no option but to do the same.. When he's doing his max 56mph in his truck and you have another moron in the middle lane what choice is there.

I love that alternating flasher kit, might invest in one of those..

What i want to know why is it always a Micra driver? You can bet your last tenner that you will be quite happily enjoying yourself, minding your own business and there will be some stupid fool in a Micra not far in front! I reckon they have their own club and one of the rules is to pee all the other road users off.. Well it works!

I thought it was only ilegal to under take if it gains you road position

If your trundling along in lane 1 at 70mph and come across another car in lane 2 doing in 65mph and you carry on past how is that ilegal is that undertaking or are you supposed to move out to lane 3 and then move back into lane 1 (f##k that!)

No, read your Highway Code, but that's not to say you won't get done for dangerous driving or other concocted penalty.

That's why I leave an empty lane between me and the ****.

Where does it say it is illegal?

Even worse than middle lane hoggers are people who sit in the outside - third - lane on the motorway with BOTH others empty. Typical of the aforementioned are kids in Corsas with their right foot in the carpet, thinking they're going fast with the engine screaming doing just over the ton. I find it amusing to first of all sit on their rear bumper, then boot it and scream past, undertaking in the middle lane, the embarrased kid feeling a bit foolish as I pass 140 and disappear over the horizon. Irresponsible, I know, but an occasional - and guilty - source of pleasure.

is it illegal to undertake?
I understand that undertaking is deemed to be if you move from the middle or outside lane to purposely pass another car. If, for example, you were happily driving along in lane 1 and you happened to undertake a car in lane 2, then, strictly speaking, that wouldn't be 'undertaking'. However, as said above, it could well be deemed as driving without due care...go figure!!

I noticed one thing about these middle lane people the other day - the only use the middle lane, regardless of the speed. If the traffic in front slows, they slow - even if lane 3 is empty....now that is stupid!

I have to say it is not limited to any type of car - there are people in every kind of car. Does not matter what they drive - it's an inbuilt sense of stupidity that means they do not think. It's a long motorway - why do I need to think? This is my switch off time?

Exactly it's not speed that causes accidents it's lack of concentration and awareness of conditions and other road users.

May be if the government spent as much effort as they do on speeders, on these type of people then the accident numbers might drop.

Speak to any racer and they will say "mistakes happen when they slow down and lose concertration" not the other way round

Stick this on the list with not indicating, incorrect lane use on roundabouts (even incorrect fog light use, if you must) etc. etc.

The police should pull these people over, and let them know they're doing wrong.

I'm not for on the spot fines or points etc. as I really believe these idiots don't know better.

Ideally, regular driving re-tests every 5 years. They want to reduce traffic, then don't renew the licenses of all these f()ckwits who can't drive.

Grrrr!

If not a complete driving test I think that we should all have to have our eyes and reactions checked once past a 50 as a lot of idiots are ones that just can't see! I know that my eyesight has changed some what since the age of 30, not badly that i can't see or need to wear glasses but enough to notice! How many drive for years without bothering to get it checked ? They probably can't even read the speedo.. Then it should go down on some sort of register for the coppers to be able to regulate it better, i bet they would catch an awful lot of vain drivers that should have glasses on but choose to drive without them!

I think flashing is the safest method. It's better than undertaking or getting real close to make the point.

I normally give a noticeable time for them to be able to see me and move over before flashing, but it's usually replied with some hand gesture and/or flashing back when i get in front.

Just think if the Police took to fining people who drive like this, like they do to the whole speed camera business, they'd make the money they're after, plus the roads would be better.

There's an idea!!

Not sure if this is valid but I was told by a police officer that I should use the first lane at night unless overtaking etc (I was stopped going quite fast in a BMW one night *cough*)

Default Middle Lane Hoggers

Hi dudes,

I think you should all take a chill pill and not get off on these hoggers. Just be pleased they are not hogging fast lane. Live and let live and if you are in a scooby just overtake with your foot down!

We need to adopt and use the European way of overtaking.
As most of you know, if they wish to overtake the car in front, they use the indicator to show you they wish to get past.
I find flashing annoying and somewhat abusive depending on how its done.
The indicator way is a lot lot better.

this is why we should move to the test every 10 years and include motorways model. keep these idiots off the road.

Also annoying - people that use the slip road to get up to 50 mph then just pull out onto the motorway. The point is you are meant to get up to motorway speed you cretins!!!! arrrrgh!

5t.

I've seen the occasional car in England do this and it just looks daft! What? You want to turn right? But you're in the outside lane of the motorway!???!

I think the answer is simple:re-evaluate the penalty point system and increase ten fold the number of unmarked cars on the road.
Keep to 12 points for a ban.
4 points for prolonged middle lane hogging.
Ban for holding mobile phone whilst driving
6 points minimum for speeding
and increase the fines. No exceptions for bans also, so all this "need it for my job" bollox goes right out of the window...

At the end of the day, drivers only take the **** because after doing a little mental risk assessment, they have decided that it is worth the risk (i.e. wont get caught or can afford the consequences) or they are just such bad drivers they're not aware...

Increase the number of traffic police, points, fines and bans and watch the roads become void of bad driving and the busses fill up leaving safe people like me to enjoy the roads...

The government cant lose, more revenue from fining and environmental benefits due to less cars., promoting their farcical carbon footprint concept...

Vote for me.

Your theory is fatally flawed if you are referring to those in the middle lane; you’re assuming they are looking in their mirrors.

You’re in a dream world, if you think it's the first option, along with all those in the middle lane.

The problem is that they do NOT think what they are doing.

There is a bright side to having to deal with middle lane hoggers in that those of us who know how to use the motorways properly can feel good that we know we are better drivers, also they give us something to complain about and where would us brits be without something to complain about?

I mean take our weather for instance, it is getting better and better and in a number of years we wont be able to complain about that.

So we are going to need the middel lane hoggers, the slow self righteous who think 40 in a 60 zone make them safe, the caravans, the traffic lights that stay red for up to 12 minutes at a time only to turn greem for 11 seconds (ever seen them?)

The best bit about the middle lane hoggers is going around them appropriately in lane 3 and carving them up when returning to lane 2. Sorry I just can't help myself.

There's a few on another web forum to do with pistons and heads that have elected this as a national petrolheads sport.

"Apparently" they pass the middle lane owners club (MLOC from now on) member in the outside lane as should be done. They then return to the inside lane as should be done. They then slow to let the MLOC member pass, then return to the outside lane to pass the MLOC again. Then see how many "laps" have to be done before the MLOC see the error of their ways...!!

No undertaking, no dangerous driving and if anyone queries it, alternating the revs to bed a rebuilt engine in as perfectly allowable as is alternating your road speed......

Be careful out there......
