But as said, lots of very capable Pocket Rockets out there for under £25K so it will want to be VERY special for £29K
IMHO

Agreed. But then again look at all us Subaru fans, more money than sense some of us, what with cost of actually buying the car, running costs and of course the obligatory modding.

My Mate John sent a letter to Subaru UK telling them what a pile of cack he thinks the new model is, and they have just sent the response, here it is.
Dear Mr .............
Thank you for your letter regarding the new Impreza.
Firstly please be assured that Subaru is not abandoning its enthusiastic owners. the new STI which is due early next year, will have much more agressive styling than the US version of the WRX and will be a real preformance car just like the current one.
The new WRX which is sold in the US is not available to either the UK or Europe However, we are possibly looking at a boxer Turbo-Diesel version for early 2009.
We do indeed intend to widen the appeal of the new Impreza and believe this is best achieved by offering a traditional Golf/Focus sized, five door only.
We appreciate that the popularity of the current Impreza turbo saloon is partly due to its close resembelance to the WRC rally car, but once the new WRC Impreza is released we are sure it will prove to be a stylish and appealing model.
Thank you for your enthusiasm toweards Subaru, and I hope you will find the new Impreza to your liking when released in the UK
Regards,
Your Sincerely

UK has 2 main concerns (USA & AUS may have different one)
1) Cant you make another Classic
2) We don't want a Pocket Rocket Chavmobile.
To answer No.1 if you were designing the old classic now but had to include todays restriction and regulations apon it you would end up with a simular size and design to the 2008 Car
to keep the same size intereior you'll end up with a Legacy size Car and way toooo heavy
To answer No.2 wait and see what prodrive do with the STi UK
IMHO

So the scoob in TimWrx's post looks like an Astra has shagged a Honda Civic and the Mitsubishi looks like an A4 has humped an Accord.
Either way its a departure from the things that people on here worship.

I am sure the actual EVO that is coming out looks watered down than compared with the concept in the above picture.I have seen some pics of it on a USA website and its not that nice.
I think wait and see what the new Impreza looks like in the flesh, and how it drives before slagging it off.I don't think its a bad idea Subaru trying to get away from the boy racer image. If they sell more cars that cant be a bad thing.Although I think its a mistake not to bring the saloon too.

IIRC Subaru a 12 month Cars sales in EU was about 62K and USA was about 200K 42K for the Impreza alone
So saloon is only to satisfiy the Major Market, USA (like larger Cars) and EU more likely to Accept a Hatchback STi or desiel Versions IMHO

AFAIK so far, we are only going to get the hatchback, whereas the US will be getting both the hatchback and saloon versions. Hopefully the saloon will also be released in Japan as I would prefer the saloon over the hatch, and as we all know, the JDM versions are where its at.

Oh well, maybe if sales are good the saloon may be introduced.Just read that its just gone on sale in Japan, they have a 2litre turbo version, again great shame that does not come here : (
I really hope the new STi gets the ATD system and semi-auto gearbox to bring it to the cutting edge. And how about direct fuel injection as apparently you can run higher compression ratio's?
