PCM tells me that car has been SVA'd. Does that mean that the DVLA have put me in the wrong tax bracket

Got a few updates for you here re the DVLA.

My initial response to DVLA:

"There seems to be a problem with my car tax here? Just received a reminder that tax is due by 30 June 2007. Reminder says that I am in Band G (highest band) with cost being £300 for a year. I've looked at your website which states:

"Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001... Band F ... £205 per year"
"Cars registered on or after 23 March 2006 ... Band G ... £300 per year"

The error seems to have arisen as my car is a Japanese Import, first registered as new in Japan in December 2004. Imported in to the UK & registered here (not new) in January 2007. I can see how you have made this mistake however it does need correcting. Please update my car tax band to F with a payment due of £205 per year, thanks."

DVLA's reply:

"It my help if I explain that as stated in your previous e-mail band G applies to vehicles that were registered on or after 23/03/06 with a CO2 emissions figure of more than 225 g/km. As your vehicle was not registered in the UK until January 2007 if it has a CO2 emissions figure higher than 225 g/km it would fall into this band."

My response (tell me if you're bored!):

"I'm struggling with the concept of this as set out by you below!
My car is not brand new, it is a second hand car (circa 2 years old when imported to the UK) registered in Japan as brand new in December 2004 (Band F), registered here in the UK January 2007 (Band G). Had it been a brand new UK car then it appears that it would be Band F yet just because it is a Japanese car it becomes Band G?! That can't be correct. Please clear this up for me as it just doesn't sound right, thanks."

And lastly their reply:

"In the Chancellors Budget in March 2006 a new tax band was created for vehicles with a Co2 emission of 225g/km or above. This would affect any vehicles registered in the UK on or after 23rd March 2006, this ruling is applicable to both new and used vehicles.therefore, this is why your vehicle is registered in the highest Vehicle Excise Duty (VED ) band.

Decisions on VED are ultimately a matter for the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Any further comments you may have on this matter should be directed to the Chancellor."

Who's the Chancellor at the moment and his address?

Well I can tell who the Chancellor is today, but as of tomorrow I'm not sure.
Anyway, if you do get hold of him, he/she will blame the last Chancellor.

Get yourself one I these, if you're thinking of continuing.

Sorry to hear about the 3oo quid scenario. But hey , pay 300 notes and drive a spec c for a year , or 35 notes & drive a 1.4 whatever. Er ...Spec C all day long me thinks!

P.S I must admit I was surprised on renewing my 04 JDM sti last month for £170 quid , a score lower than my old Cupra r ! won't be querying it though.

I said this before all the new scoobs re sales values will fall faster than the classics and the pre 23march 06 bugs, blobs, hawks, if you have scoob registered on the 22nd march 06 being the newest then you have the best re sale car, as I think once the cars go down to 10k or so, road tax for these beasts may well be 500 quid a year or more!!! people just wont buy em.

They only import 500 a year so no SVA tests therefore ommisions on the logbook read 0 - which means lowest tax bracket

LOL sorry to rain on your parade but it cracks me up that there's people driving round in virtually new Spec C's who've got the cheek to complain about road tax. Expensive, thirsty, new cars cost a lot to run, that's not news is it?

I'm gutted about spending £180 a year in tax on my 10 year old WRX wagon that's worth 3 grand at best, but I don't keep moaning about it. Driving a fast car on the public highways is not, contrary to most people's ideas, their inalienable right. It is a privilege. Get used to it.

^^ Initial query was surprise really as I hadn't expected it. Now I'm thinking that it's just wrong! I've a 54 plate car that would be Band F if a UK car however is Band G just cos it's an import As above poster said I'm probably on a hiding to nothing however I do intend to COMPLAIN.

STC.

Agree that it's OK today. In a few years time though it may be '000s! General consensus is that Band G will be hammered over coming years.

How pissed off am I... my car was registered on the 30th March 2006. Most expensive 7 days of my life!

It really is an absolute tax rip off sold under the "green" banner. We should start a petition or something. Don't think because you have an older car you will be safe. Stinging new cars was just a way to get the ball rolling... soon all so called polluters will be paying through the nose.

"What could happen if I don't pay my vehicle tax?

Registered keepers of untaxed vehicles can be fined a minimum of £1,000.
They are also required to purchase a tax disc, pay arrears of vehicle tax accrued while the vehicle was untaxed and pay a penalty of £80.

The maximum penalty for making a false declaration by declaring Statutory Off Road Notification when the vehicle is actually used or kept on a public road is £5,000 and two years imprisonment."

Not sure what the average fine might be ...

Ouch, that's a bit naughty.

Was just thinking... if they put the tax up too high it may be worth risking paying the fines instead, but they will probably rise as the taxes do anyway.

I can see this going the way of the poll tax to be honest.
