BAAS LTD.

Of course you will not use all the capabilities of the oil, nor will most use the capabilities of their cars, nor even their own bodies. As you well know, there are plenty of additives in the oils but who can guess which one they are going to use? I don't, but the overall effect is to reduce wear, increase performance, reduce emmissions, increase cold start performance, reduce oil breakdown when the engine gets hot (e.g. traffic jams), even increase acceleration very slightly. All of those are of use to everyone. Yes there is lots of hi-tec stuff in the oil and all of it will help at some stage of engine use even if you do not get the maximum benefit from it. Short journeys, cold weather, dusty climate, towing, hot weather all affect engines and the lubricants so the better the quality the better the performance and the less engine wear you get.

BAAS Ltd 41 NEW BARN STREET, PLAISTOW, LONDON, E13 8JY website is not working ....... how many employees has it got? Doesn't appear to be a big Engineering concern?

The ONLY thing to help with extreme driving, stop/start and dusty conditions for example is more regular Oil changes ...... NOT a higher spec Oil than recommended by Subaru.

You seem to miss the point quite amazingly given your elevated position ..... the £15 Oil that is recommended by Subaru is for the UK Climate and Conditions.

Putting in a higher spec will NOT, repeat NOT, reduce engine wear! What will result in more engine wear is to extend Oil change intervals.

Given an Oil change every 6 months minimum using Subaru recommended Oil will be absolutely fine for the car - end of.

Use the car Racing and Rallying? look for something beyond standard - but if you are you wouldn't be asking on here what you should use, would you?

No not BAAS LTD in London. I have consultants working in Lincs, Hants, Lancs, Berlin, The Hague, Frankfurt, Munich, Toulouse and Madrid. What difference does that make anyway? Size of work force proves nothing as most large engineering firms use us smaller companies to do what they do not want to have as a core capability. I do/have done consultancy for BAES, Toyota UK, Airbus Industries, EH, Westland, Charles Church Spitfires Ltd, Fairoaks Aviation, DAS Ltd, Barr and Stroud, IBM, Notts University, Britannia Airways, Marshall Aerospace, Clemtech, FRS, FR Aviation, Excalibur Airways, Monarch, Air 2000, Air 2000 Europe, Royal Air Force, USAF, USN, USMC, Royal Navy, Ferranti, Bristol Uni and many others (and some who would not appreciate being named here. Is that good enough?

I disagree with your ideas that using above minimum spec will have no advantages. It is similar to the fuel debate. 97 RON is not the same across the board. I get more sustained power from V-Power than I do from BP, Total or Esso. I also get better oil performance, in my opinion, from a higher grade. This argument can go on forever and ever and no-one will ever prove to the others that he is right, because every driver and car is different. Different mixes of oil and fuel as well as weather and road conditions will make a difference. So I bow to your superioirty again and will continue to treat my car as I see fit and continue to study my profession at the highest level and technicality that I can - whilst providing my customers with expertise and considered best practice at a cost suitable to their pockets whilst enjoying driving and maintaining my Scoob at the best standard I can afford. No compromise. If it isn't right in my considered and informed opinion, then I will not use it.

No worries .... I was just trying to see whether your Directorship was one like where I work and Directing 6,000 Scientists and Engineers, working on the leading edge of Engineering and Science. My Father-In-Law calls himself a Director, indeed all the people in his small comapny are

Do you have a WebSite?

No website, employed by word of mouth or by tendering these days. Good position to be in. Giving it all up in September, gonna try something new, pass on the experience to the younger ones. Virtual retirement at last. Maybe do my other trade too for a change. Geomatics.

Is it not better to use cheaper oil and change the oil twice as often than use expensive oil and change the oil every 7500miles?

maybe, difficult to tell, I change mine every 5k as my Scoob is on 10k service intervals. The higher grade oils often take longer to break down, but a medium priced one would be a good bet, say every 4-5k depending on your driving style. No more than 6 months between changes anyway.

And that remains the best piece of advice regarding Oil ...... change it often, at least every 6 months.

The expensive Oils will retain their spec. for longer - I don't dispute that, but I would feel very uneasy knowing the black Oil (in spec. or not) that is sloshing around my engine is older than 6 months old.

Only in regards to subaru engines though. Mercedes, audi and porsche engines are completely different animals which can run on the same oil fine for over 20,000 miles and people not being scared of blowing up their engines or loosing BHP.

I usually change mine every 3-3.5K miles as opposed to the 7.5k service interval. The oil is usually just starting to get "dirty".
