Cool

Well, I just bought a SAMSUNG LE40M87BDX plus stand plus upscaling DVD player.

Here's hoping........

It has had some outstanding reviews, let's hope they are right.

Why are some of you saying that it's the 699 pounds he spent that's at fault? He found it at a special price. The same TV is 1000 pounds elsewhere.

blimey id stand a better chance learning spanish than understanding all that, lol.

i know the tv only cost £699 but it cant be that bad if comet are charging £949 for it,
so right i have set it up using the sky box connected to the tv and also the dvd player scarted to the tv,
have i done summat wrong, what can i do to make a clearer picture, at the moment im watching the under 21s footie, the close ups are not to bad but when it pans out the picture isnt as food, esp when a goal kick is taken the ball looks like a white ball of fire going through the sky,
any changes i could make, different leads etc, or swap it aound somehow.

That Samsung is rated as one of the best for it's price bracket (of around £1000), it's comparable with the Panasonic 42PX70 and in some reviews it's better. I had a tough choice deciding on what one I should order, the Panasonic looked stunning when I saw it with a HD feed!

I've just taken the plunge and ordered the Samsung PS42C96HDX from Empire Direct for £675 inc 3 years warranty and delivery, bargain!

Technology moves on, those that say "you get what you pay for" are the ones that shelled out £2k for a worse TV several years ago and are now just jealous.

you got SMD and low noise stuff switched on?

honestly go to the av forums and search your model number, you will get the best advice for setting the set up.

The Samsung PS42Q97HDX is notable for its huge array of available manual adjustments. We judged this screen on factory presets, but from a little foray into the screens manual adjustments we are pretty confident that you would be able to tweak the PS42Q97HDX to suit most circumstances - you can even switch DNIe off completely.
av forums are down, i would search in the morning

the dnie option is a demo to show half the screen wit it enabled and half without, this is a bit daft, as to turn it off you have to go into the service menu, from what i gathered older models had the option to switch it off in the options list, why samsung put it in the service menu i simply don't know

there should also be settings for SMD and some other stuff

how i run mine is like this

xbox 360 via component lead into the samsung

samsung settings
dnie off via the service menu
game mode on
smd off
digital noise reduction on
everything else off

dnie needs to be switched off for every input separately

do you have grey lines on the screen when you select the screen burn white test?

drops the screen response time and bumps up the contrast *i think* apparently samsung developed the game mode with microsoft for the xbox360

i found that the game mode made gears of war a bit to dark for my liking, but with the dnie switched off it made it spot on!

the dnie does something with the blacks to make them "better" but in reality what i found was that you would lose a bit of detail, and sometimes the system would flicker as it tried to decide what to do with the current picture, its very slight, but once you notice it once, you notice it all the time

dnie seams a bit crap, game mode seams fine

to many bloody options

no probs, to be honest when i got mine home 2 weeks back (as above same tv but a matt black case and i paid more then this bloke as well )

i spent a good 2 days messing with the settings till i was happy, i had some strange things like "tearing" of the picture and stuff when the universal studios logo came on the screen and IIRC turning smd off fixed that.

av forums were a goldmine of info at the time
i will give a warning about messing with the service menu, be very careful, i had a play about and pressed the wrong key and the screen went off

i was lucky in that i remembered how to "back up" my selected options so the screen came back on

Good luck getting it sorted ..... but, this has to be a great example of an industry up-pricing a customer base to a worse product!

We buy TVs for a great picture, right? So the only reason to switch from hi-def CRTs to plasma (or LCD) is for thinner sets. But they're so much worse from a picture quality, it's amazing to me that people buy them! Not only have they massively boosted the TV industry (higher prices and margins) but they have shorter obsolescence times (i.e. they don't last anywhere near as long).

Everyone knows they can't cope with fast moving action (there's a reason the shops show digital animation or slow-panning scenery stuff / DVDs specifically made to show the sets off to best-effect). The comment about the football looking like a ball of fire across the screen says it all for me - I shan't be spending £1000+ on one!

Same scene, same disc, same (old) DVD player, CRT vs plasma....

Sony WEGA 100hz 32" (1700 quid new) RGB via quality scart....

detail...

Panasonic TH50PX60 (1500 quid new +5yr warranty & extras) via component....

detail...

I plan to upgrade to an HDMI upscaling player to keep the signal digital throughout soon, so I expect another quality hike, let alone the jump I will see when I go hi-def.

Yeah - Bought a PS3 as well for £349.00. Its all got a 5 year warranty, either from manufacturer or from the shop so you can't really argue.
