To be fair, in the last 12 months I have bought everything that plugs in from this place. On Thursday I bought two 42" TV's, two PS3's, 4 80 Gig Ipods, 2 20" TV's and 9 iPod docking stations. Since last year, you can add Neff fridge, feezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, two ovens, grill, island extractor and hob, so £499.00 probably isn't a standard price

my G/F is not the most practical of people and still has not noticed that the car dashboard has been re-trimmed in alcantara

but even she noticed the difference in quality over "the big old ones" as she calls them (ie CRT)

I personally think that a decent CTR is still better, but how much house do you need to fit in a 42" CRT

p.s. - That is based on watching terrestrial TV on both. 1080p games and Blu Ray movies are scarily good, but I had to go out of my way to find 1080p stuff

Beg to differ. Had a very good CRT and now have a very good plasma, and wouldn't go back. Especially when you consider the HD upgrade when it is viable (format war and lack of broadcast material holds me back).

Will be adding a Mac Mini as a media centre very soon and so will have online HD content.

No question about HD v's SD, but how much HD stuff is kicking about at the mo? I think a CRT will still do SD better

My pics above show different IMHO. Superb natural colours (unlike LCD's artificially bright pallette with excessive contrast to counter black issues) with a smooth and detailed film-like quality. Coupled with the massive size and flat profile I am more than impressed, especially as it cost me 200 less than the high-end CRT it replaced (400 if you count what I sold the Sony for).

Well it's arrived today. The SD pic is not as good as my CRT, but the size of the screen doesn't help I suppose.

Need to get some decent settings for it now.

Know naff all about TVs (a Hi Fi person) but we got a 21" LCD TV made by LG two years ago (ish) for £399 and it's been fantastic AND came with a proper 3 year guarantee.

Just got a digi box and it' has a very good picture.

Would never ever get a giant TV - dominates a room and looks tacky IMO.

i have the LG32XR lcd and connected to an HDMI DVD source it's flawless. great contrast and really excellent image quality.

connect via scart or a non dvd source (broadcast/sky, say) and the image quality is sh!te

check your tv via an hdmi connected dvd player with a new film and then see whether your tv is cr@p or not

i have a feeling another round of price cuts will happen soon, as more people offer the 1080 sets rather then just the 720 versions

Tried the upscaling DVD thru HDMI, and I have to say, the picture was outstanding, better than I thought it would.

Borrowing a friends PS3 tomorrow, I can see this getting expensive........

Cheapo scart leads do not have individually screened cables which means that there can be interference between the signals on the separate leads in tbe scart cable. Try a decent fully screened scart lead for a start.

If that does not fix it-complain to the supplier about the TV. this is assuming you have a good aerial or digital set-up.

So in my case with a 42" that I got last year which was over a grand, it can now be had for under a grand, does that mean my picture quality will be better than the now reduced price?

If the tv has got grey lines running down it then would suggest it is a problem with the set.

It takes a while to get a decent picture straight from the box with plasmas as the brightness and contrast etc tend to be set well too high. You can get people in to set it up correctly, and also the cables can and do make a difference

Mate has a 42" Samsung plasma and it is poo poo. Brother has a Samsung LCD and the pic is fantastic.
I did a lot of research before buying LCD over Plasma...

Plasma served no other purpose than to get early adopters used to thin wall mounted type televsions prior to the launch of LCD. Now LCD is widely available, Plasma sales should diminish as there is no comparison

LCD from what i can see doesnt have great refresh rates. So when watching the footie it will trace a lot.

The blacks aren't black on LCDs I've seen, have I only seen poor ones? Candle lit caves look poor for example

Just interested, how were those pics taken? I ask because when I watch a DVD I certainly don't "see" the same bad picture you show in your post for the CRT.

I've got a 25" Sony Trinitron CRT that we've had for over 10 years I think. I just can't bring myself to buy a Plasma or LCD at the moment.

Well I was watching the tennis yesterday on mine for that very reason, 'cos I wanted to see how bad it would be, and to be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between the ball on the CRT in the other room and on my LCD. I'm not saying that because I've bought LCD either, I am very critical of anything I buy. It was one of my worries about going LCD in fact, so it looks like the current crop have pretty much got rid of this problem.

As for blacks, I suppose I won't have a plasma side by side to check, but they ceratinly look good enough to my eye.

I went Plasma largely down to sitting in Currys for hours on end and attempting to compare LCD with Plasma.

As mentioned it has alot to do with feed and the quality and its almost impossoble to judge what a TV will look like in your front room under wharehouse lights ala currys.

I think its pretty much a given that if you watch TV and movies then Plasma may be your choice of screen. If you intend to put any console or PC feed through the TV for any length of time go for LCD.


As for 699 plasma being crap. See my post above. PX70s are well regarded on AV Forums and Panasonic/Pioneer are considered best you can get. And mines covered for 5 years.

the plasma was cheaper and with a much better picture, i was prepared to pay the extra of the lcd was better as i had heard all this "LCD FOR THE WIN" rubbish but with them side by side, the plasma won hands down, no contest!!

Pics were taken using the same 5mp compact digital camera, tripod mounted at a distance to fill the viewfinder with the whole screen in each case, and set not to use flash with automatic metering. The only adjustment made in PS was cropping. DVD was R1 LOTR FOTR through a Panasonic 656A. The CRT used RGB through scart and the plasma was component. Pics taken 2 days apart. Disregarding the pics, I personally am more than happy, and look forward to revealing more of the Viera's potential with HD material soon.

the general consensus is anything over 37" should be plasma, anything below lcd. Its only recently that lcds have a decent enough refresh rate for fast action pictures/games etc

i should have added, i have no scart leads in my system, simple xbox 360 hooked up via component, i have set the 360 to 1080i as it seams a bit nicer on the eyes then 720 IMO for some reason (even tho i think the tv downgrades it back down to 720

i do have 1 cctv camera hooked up via a scart to check on the car and the picture is not very good, but that doesn't help this conversation LOL

I have to disagree, i have a top quality plasma (Pioneer 50" XDE circa 3K whhen i bought it) and a top quality LCD (Sony Bravia 32" circa £1200 when i bought it), both on identical feeds/signals and the plasma is better in all respects apart from maybe the very slight ghosting you can get on some fast moving sports.
