All the ally frame bikes mentioned are going to be great rides, I've no doubt. Just being contrarian and putting another option out there!

Quite right. Steel frames are still highly thought of.

PS Was born before Armstong pranced about on the moon, yet was still like a pig in mud in the local hills on the mountainbike today. Live long and prosper mate.

I'm 6'1 and have a 19" Rockhopper. Though it's currently just a frame with the gear mech's on it at present. I bought a Pipedream Sirius steel frame and moved most of the bits over.

Its not big bucks and with helmet, gloves, oil etc it all came to over £500. I didn't want to spend a fortune and it sit in the shed gathering dust.

Only thing I'm missing on it is lockout for the fork. Its quite soft but being 10 stone dripping wet its not an issue for me
I was going to ge tthe next one up (£600) through the Cycle scheme, but the local dealers couldn't get any medium or large Genesis's for me to try for size.

Dont forget to use it prodominantly for work!

Thumbs up

I take it that I would i need the 19 inch frame for the Rock Hopper??
Probably the best bet Rasher. I'm 5'9 and bught a 17" but that's to keep the bike smallish and 'playbike' feel. If you were doing all tarmac and had a long upper body then with your height you could strectch to a 21" but 19" is probably spot on.

I bought the rockhopper on-line and all I had to do was:

straighten the handlebars,
attach the pedals,
adjust seat,
remove plastic shimano clip in (undoubtedly a Health & Safety pre-requisite) reflectors to the SPD pedals,
remove around 500 American Health & Safety warnings.... ie. If brakes not used properly then this could result in serious injury or death etc etc

By the time I unpacked it and got all teh feckin warnings off, it was getting dark and too late to head out that night on my new toy

If I were looking, with £1000, I'd be looking on e-bay for a 19" TITANIUM frame. They go for quite small money, as most folk now seem to want very small frames, and are foten selling one they bought which they feel is too large for them. I reckon you could get one for £300 or so. I bought an X-Lite one for my eldest off there for £250 in 15", titanium is virtually bomb-proof, so age isn't a consideration. He's made it up into a light, springy bike that rides like a small hovercraft

I REALLY fancied the white one but was more than I wanted to pay and its got SPD (?) over normal pedals.

I got a 17.5" frame which feels fine but I've moved the seat as far back as possible because I've got very long arms.

It got a very good review in WMB but the fork is a bit iffy. Might try and find a cheap fork with lock facility.

Sucks ? You could say that ! Their insurance company has been contacted and the wheels are in motion.
I've still not had the chance to clean the bile up properly but the bars and grips are knackered, possibly the brake lever, the frame has a knick out of it and the forks are all scratched! All that and nothing has even been checked for any twisting. I'll be looking for a new bike out of it. My 6 month old bike was pristine (well there were a couple of trail gained chips) but now it's battered!

The Avid juicy Fives aint up to much Rasher, neither are the Truative bits fitted.

Mind u the Rockshox reba's aint a bad pair of forks.

IMO you could do better with a nice Rocky Mountain that comes with Easton bits as standard and also comes with a better hand built Mavic wheel set
